deeply to his audience – to use music for self-expression, storytelling and connection. His music draws from traditional bluegrass, with spiritual influence in his deep, melodic vocals – reflections from his childhood singing hymns in church in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. A legacy of artists and nonconformists, Sam is from a family that valued the importance of stories and their role in shaping our lives. This is wholly reflected in his lyrics and songwriting process. Beginning with poetry, exploring the human experience and finding rhythm and themes in the verse, he then sets them to melodies that feel both familiar and transformative. He takes these songs and performs them with a sense of pure joy and emotional catharsis. Whether playing solo or alongside his band of skilled musicians, Sam’s shows are emotionally resonant, crafted to stir the soul and invite listeners into a shared experience. As he continues to tour, bringing his unique blend of tradition and contemporary insight to new audiences, Sam Carlson remains a compelling voice of American folk and bluegrass, a bridge between past and present, always creating and performing with heart.
Thank you for joining us on this special evening. I’m very excited to share these original songs of mine with you tonight. Before going any further, I would like to first thank the Anne McKee Artist Fund and the Tennessee Williams Theatre for selecting me for the very first Performance Grant. I am incredibly grateful for this unique opportunity. This evening you will hear a number of songs performed over two sets with a brief intermission between. These are songs that I wrote over the last handful of years, and tonight you will witness an attempt to weave them together so as to tell a story. This night would not be possible without the support of the band tonight. I am pleased to introduce the band as follows: • • • • • Rich Hennessy: Upright Bass Ryan Ptasnik: Drums and Percussion Drew Kiniry: Electric Guitar Ian Taylor: Keys Jerome E. Miller: Harmonica Once again, thank you to everyone involved that brought this night to life, and thank you for attending! To life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness! Yours Truly, Sam Carlson
