Cllr Claire Holland Cllr Issa Issa OVAL AN UPDATE FROM YOUR LAMBETH LABOUR COUNCILLORS The number of homeless families Lambeth Council has housed since 2020 has almost doubled Source: House of Commons Library, Local authority data: finance, 2024 = 100 households 2020 today it only receives £5 in real terms £183.8 million Our funding from central government has been cut by more than 60% since the Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition government of 2010. Whilst the Labour Government has made positive first steps, there is a lot of damage to undo. For every £14 that Lambeth Council received from central government back in 2010 for core council services £508.7 million Fourteen years of Tory and Lib Dem cuts to Lambeth’s funding have taken their toll. 2024 Source: Lambeth Council, Homelessness Review 2024 But other Conservative failures mean Lambeth has much more to do. The national housing crisis means Lambeth has to house twice the number of homeless families it did before Conservative and Lib Dem austerity and costs Lambeth £90 million a year in temporary accomodation. Lambeth Labour has prioritised spending on schools, our environment and building council homes. Lambeth residents say this spending matters most to them. Turn the page to find out more... ON YOUR SIDE IN OVAL New investment into your local library Your local Labour Councillors have successfully lobbied for more investment into Tate South Lambeth Library. This follows the council installing environmentally friendly air source heat pumps at the library providing cleaner and cheaper energy. The further works we have managed to secure will include a new room for film shows and events, new toilets and general refurbishment. Supporting our Young People We are supporting the borough becoming UNICEF registered Child Friendly. This means ensuring our young people have opportunities to learn and play. We have secured funding for After School Clubs and computer coding classes at the Wheatsheaf Hall. We will also again be funding Holiday Food and Activities programmes this Christmas school holiday at venues across our local area including at The Triangle Adventure Playground & Eritrean Muslim Community Association UK. Dockless Bikes We have been campaigning hard for tighter rules on companies who scatter dockless bikes across our streets, irresponsibly creating hazards for us all but in particular for residents with mobility issues, wheelchair users and carers with children. We are delighted that thanks to our collective lobbying the government announced on 16 December 2024 they will introduce legislation to enable TfL to regulate dockless e-bikes. We will work with TfL and continue to raise your concerns and ideas to help shape how the schemes can better work on our streets in Oval ward to ensure safer and tidier neighbourhoods. ON YOUR SIDE
