Celebrating

20 years CHRIS BULAHDELAH HOARE Central School CUP Chris Hoare attended Bulahdelah Central School from Kindergarten to Year 12 and completed his HSC in 1994. He took on many roles within the school including being elected to the Student Representative Council, performing in school musicals and participating in fundraising activities. Chris excelled in sport. His potential was evident during his primary school years when he was the Junior Boys Athletics, Tennis and Swimming Champions. In secondary school he represented BCS in Athletics and Cross Country and was selected in the Manning Zone Open Rugby League team. Chris received the School Sportsperson of the Year Award in recognition of his sporting talents and achievements. Chris was selected in the Newcastle Under 18 Rugby League Representative Squad in 1993. He played against Queensland at Lang Park before the third test against New Zealand and scored the winning try for Newcastle. He also played in the Newcastle team against Western Australia and in Under 19 Country Championships. In September 1994 Chris received confirmation of his selection in the Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg Summer Training Squad. CUP HISTORY Damien Keen Under the driving force of BCS TAS teacher Damien Keen, the school sought to establish an interschool Rugby League competition to celebrate and honour Chris’s sporting achievements. It was decided this would be an annual match between Bulahdelah Central School and Gloucester High School. The inaugural match was played on 20 May 2004 on the oval at Bulahdelah Central School. It was refereed by Bill Harrigan who is considered one of Australia's greatest sports umpires. The U/14’s played for the Chris Hoare Shield, and the Open team contested the Cup. Over the years, the competition has expanded with additional sports being played between the two schools. These have included girls and boys soccer, netball, touch football and league tag. Blake Matheson: 2022-2024 It is a privilege to represent BCS in the blue and white colours. I have enjoyed the good rivalry with Gloucester, and although it is nice to come away with a win, it is always a great experience either way. Luke Barry: 2004-2006 It is so good to see the Chris Hoare Cup has continued every year. It is great for the school and community. It meant a lot to me when Bulahdelah won the Cup for the first time and being the first winning captain. I am very proud to have been part of it. Jaxon Harris: 2011-2014 It was always one of the best days of the year, and one we eagerly looked forward to. After losing by two points in 2013, we were determined to pull off a victory in 2014 and bring the cup back. Bulahdelah’s determination and aggression in defence and brute strength in attack were too much for Gloucester to handle. A mighty 42-4 win to Bulahdelah. It was such an honour to be involved. Open Rugby League Coach: Tim Browne Captain: Toby Wilton Tim is a former BCS student and retired professional rugby league player. He made his NRL debut in 2010 with the Canterbury Bulldogs and played 150 games for the club. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2010 and Clubman of the Year in 2015. Tim finished his playing career with the Penrith Panthers in 2018. He now operates Leading Edge, a successful Rugby League coaching program inspiring young people to dream big. Toby made his cup debut in 2022 in the U/14 Chris Hoare Cup team. In an electrifying game, Toby showed impressive form with a full-length run of the field try. As a stand-out player, he was named team captain in 2023. Toby put in an exceptional performance, guiding the boys around the park and making several line breaks and some superb tackles, leading to the U/14’s victory. Toby returns to the field this year as Captain of the 2024 Open team. “I was lucky enough to play in the very first Chris Hoare Cup game way back in 2004. I still remember putting the school jersey on and representing the school with my mates. That is still in my memory as one of the best moments of my football career. It is truly an honour to be able to come back and coach the school team that I once played for.” Tim Browne Sam Alchin Ash Baillie Coby Bates Darcy Ellicott

Team Captain Toby Wilton The Gloucester defence was just too strong for us. There was always someone there each time we tried to break through. Bulahdelah hit back hard and our team captain Toby Wilton managed to scooter through the defence and score a try. Deegan Ingram nailed the conversion. We put in a good team effort, but unfortunately for us, Gloucester took the win. Can’t wait for next years game. Sam Alchin Sam Alchin Ezra Hammerl Blake Matheson

Ash Baillie The team played well on the day. Gloucester were very strong, but we had many standout players. Coby Bates and Kurt Van-Veen were good all rounders and forward Sam Alchin ran hard all game. Charlie Matheson was determined and never let up and had some great tackles. Some injuries on the field left us down a couple of key players, but we had the numbers to fill their spots. It was great that all players had a crack. Toby Wilton Toby Wilton Team Captain
