October 7, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK EC writes to political parties to give authentic info on financial viability of election promises New Delhi [India], October 5 (ANI): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday wrote to the political parties for providing authentic information to the voters to assess the financial viability of their election promises. “It cannot overlook inadequate disclosures on election promises and consequential undesirable impact on financial sustainability as empty Election promises so made have far-reaching ramifications,” said ECI. ECI prescribes a standardized disclosure proforma, facilitating comparability, with minute details broadly capturing standard parameters as used by FC, RBI, FRBM, CAG and in Budgets. E l e c t i o n Commission aimed to inform voters about the financial feasibility of election promises in the manifesto and also whether sustainable within the financial space of the State/ Union. While the existing guidelines under MCC require the political parties and candidates to explain the rationale for promises made therein as well as the possible ways and means to finance such promises, the Election Commission of India has observed that the declarations are quite routine, ambiguous and do not provide adequate information to voters to exercise informed choice in an election. E l e c t i o n Commission in its meeting led by CEC Rajiv Kumar and attended by EC Anup Chandra Pandey decided that ECI cannot remain a mute spectator and overlook the undesirable impact of some of the promises and offers, on the conduct of free and fair elections and maintain a level playing field for all political parties and candidates. ECI agrees in principle with the point of view that framing manifestos is the right of the political parties. This came amid an ongoing political debate over freebie politics. (ANI)

PM Modi on this occasion also shared glimpses of Shastri’s gallery in the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya in Delhi and urged the people to visit the museum. Gandhi’s birth anniversary is globally observed as the International Day of Non-Violence, underlining his philosophy of non-violence to achieve social or political change. Paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 153rd birth anniversary, PM Modi tweeted, “This Gandhi Jayanti is, even more, special because India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Maybe always live up to Bapu’s ideals. I also urge you to purchase Khadi and handicrafts products to tribute Gandhi Ji.” “Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji is admired all across India for his simplicity and decisiveness. His tough leadership at a crucial time in our history will always be remembered. Tributes to him on his Jayanti,” he added. “Today, on Shastri Ji’s Jayanti I am also sharing some glimpses from his gallery in the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya in Delhi, which showcases his life journey and accomplishments as PM. Do visit the Museum,” he stated. Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a nonviolent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule. This led to India finally achieving its independence in 1947. Fondly known as Bapu, his unwavering belief in ‘Swaraj’ (selfgovernance) and ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) won him accolades across the world. G l o b a l l y, Gandhi’s birth anniversary is celebrated as the International Day of NonViolence. Several events are held in India and across the world to mark the occasion. Born in Uttar Pradesh in 1904, Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India and served from 1964 to 1966. He died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, at the age of 61, soon after signing the Tashkent Pact with Pakistan. (ANI) New York [US], October 2 (ANI): United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on Sunday urged people to shun violence by following Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Ahimsa (nonviolence) on the occasion of his 153rd birth anniversary. Notably, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday is celebratedastheInternational Day of Non-Violence. “On the International Day of Non-Violence, we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday & values of peace, respect & the essential dignity shared by everyone. We can defeat today’s challenges by embracing these values & working across cultures & borders to build a better future,” tweeted the UN chief. M o h a n d a s Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Gandhiji, a great leader of India who gave his life for the country, was born on 2nd October 1869. This day is celebrated with great pleasure every year to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation as well as to remember his values, principles and philosophy. In June 2007, the United Nations General Assembly marked 2nd October as International Day of Non-violence. M o h a n d a s Karamchand Gandhi was India’s most important freedom fighter. He led the non-violence movement against the British. He studied law and went to South Africa to represent a client. After returning to India, he joined the Indian National Congress. He fought for women’s rights and caste discrimination. He also led nationwide campaigns for peasants, labourers and farmers. After 21 years of Gandhi’s death, Great Britain released a stamp to honour him. Gandhiji never won a Nobel Peace Prize, but he was nominated 5 times. Only Gandhi has been the first and only Indian to have been honoured with the title ‘Time Person of the Year’ in 1930. Many world leaders like Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and John Lennon consider Gandhi ideal. This is because he fought for freedom from the British, but he also fought against social issues like caste discrimination, women’s rights, etc. (ANI) UN chief Guterres urges people to shun violence on Mahatma Gandhi’s 153rd birth anniversary

October 7, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK J-K: ‘Gupkar model’ laid out red carpet for Pakistani terrorists, says Amit Shah in Baramulla Baramulla (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 5 (ANI): Launching an unsparing attack on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the ‘Gupkar alliance’ of “laying a red carpet” for Pakistani terrorists into the country. Shah said that the “Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration model” (PAGD) had presented the youth of the region with stones, closed colleges and machine guns in their hands, whereas Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s model has brought them education. PAGD is a political alliance between the six regional parties in J-K formed by Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. The alliance seeks the restoration of Article 370 and statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Minister’s remarks came while addressing a public meeting in Baramulla, on the last day of his three-day visit to the Union Territory which would conclude today. “There are two models. One of PM Modi which gives employment, peace and brotherhood; and another is the Gupkar model which led to the Pulwama attack. PM Modi made a hospital in Pulwama at an expense of Rs 2,000 crore. The Gupkar model is laying the red carpet for the Pakistani terrorists into the country, whereas the Modi model is implementing an investment of Rs 56,000 crore on the ground giving employment to the youth. Gupkar model placed stones, closed colleges, and machine guns in the hands of the youth. Modi model has IIM, IIT, AIIMS, NIFT, and NEET for the youth. The youth wants education Mr Farooq Abdullah, not stones in their hands,” he said. Shah asked the former chief ministers about the amount that was brought into the region as an investment during their respective tenures. Octogenarian security guard killed for not allowing liquor M u m b a i the day of the incident, (Maharashtra) [India], October 5 (ANI): An octogenarian man, working as a security guard, was allegedly bludgeoned to death in the Powai area of Mumbai on Tuesday. Both the accused and the victim were the residents of a chawl near an open plot in the area. Theincidenttook place in the early hours of the day at JC Builders compound- where the deceased, 86-year-old Limbaji Kamble worked as a security guard. The accused, Shripat Dengle, allegedly in an inebriated state, allegedly beat up the old man with sticks after the deceased didn’t allow him to drink liquor, officials said. The 58-year-old accused used to visit the compound- an open plot owned by a private builder near the Hiranandani Hospital in Powai. On Kamble denied Dengle to consume liquor, which irked the latter. Around 4 pm on Tuesday Kamble assaulted Dengle with wooden sticks leading to the old man’s death. “Shripat Dengle (56) allegedly hit his colleague with sticks and killed him on the spot following a brawlwhich started after the old man denied the accused to consume liquor in an open plot on Monday,” Mumbai Police said. After hearing Kamble’s screams some locals ran to the spot and called up the security guard’s son, who rushed his father to the Rajawadi Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Mumbai Police have registered a case on the statement given by the family members of Kamble against Shripat Dengle. (ANI) “I have come today to ask Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti how much investment did you draw in Jammu and Kashmir during the 70-year rule of the three families. How many industries were set up? How many youths were given employment? An investment of merely Rs 15,000 crore was done here in 70 years. PM Modi has brought an investment of Rs 56,000 crore in these three years in the region,” he said. Shah further accused the “three families” of J-K of being responsible for the killings of the residents of the region by terrorists. “Has terrorism done any good to anybody in the world? Can the sympathisers of terrorism tell of any such incident? 42,000 people of J-K have been victims of terrorism From The Poet’s Pen INDIA THIS WEEK- October 7, 2022 Three Wise Old Women by Elizabeth T. Corbett Three wise old women were they, were they, Who went to walk on a winter day: One carried a basket to hold some berries, One carried a ladder to climb for cherries, The third, and she was the wisest one, Carried a fan to keep off the sun. But they went so far, and they went so fast, They quite forgot their way at last, So one of the wise women cried in a fright, “Suppose we should meet a bear tonight! Suppose he should eat me!” “And me!!” “And me!!!” “What is to be done?” cried all the three. “Dear, dear!” said one, “we’ll climb a tree, There out of the way of the bears we’ll be.” But there wasn’t a tree for miles around; They were too frightened to stay on the ground, So they climbed their ladder up to the top, And sat there screaming “We’ll drop! We’ll drop!” But the wind was strong as the wind could be, And blew their ladder right out to sea; So the three wise women were all afloat In a leaky ladder instead of a boat, And every time the waves rolled in, Of course the poor things were wet to the skin. Then they took their basket, the water to bale, They put up their fan instead of a sail: But what became of the wise women then, Whether they ever sailed home again, Whether they saw any bears, or no, You must find out, for I don’t know. from 1990 till today. Who is responsible for their deaths? The three families that ruled here were responsible. Terrorism is moving towards extinction,” he said. “Some people talk about Pakistan here. I want to tell them today, bring the stats about the number of villages in PoK that have been electrified. Electricity has reached every village in our Kashmir. Mufti and company, and Abdullah and sons ruled Kashmir for 70 years, but did not provide 1 lakh houses, but PM Modi, from 2014 till 2022, has given houses to 1 lakh people in J-K,” Shah added. Taking a jibe at the National Conference chief and PDP chief on their demands to talk to Pakistan, the Home Minister said that he does not want to talk to the neighboring country, and intends to talk to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir instead. “Those who ruled for 70 years here suggest me to talk to Pakistan. I have a clear view, I do not want to talk to Pakistan, I want to talk to the Gujjars, Paharis and Bakarwals in Baramulla. I want to talk to the youth of Kashmir. Think with open eyes and minds, those who spread terrorism, what good have they done to Kashmir?” he said adding that J-K has to join the race with other states which are moving ahead in the country. “We do not have to follow the path shown by terrorists. I urge you to extend your support to us,” he said. Lauding PM Modi for bringing investment into J-K, Shah said that the region which was known to be a “terrorist hotspot” has now become a “tourism hotspot”. “Earlier, this was a terrorist hotspot, now it’s a tourism hotspot. You (Farooq and Mehbooba) gave stones and guns in the hands of the youth, whereas PM Modi gave laptops and mobiles into their hands by bringing industries here,” Shah said. INDIA THIS WEEK

FRIDAY OCTOBER 7, 2022 7 ~ INDIA ~ NEPAL ~ BANGLA DESH ~ PAKISTAN ~ SRI LANKA ~ AFRICA ~ ASIA ~ EUROPE ~ MIDDLE EAST 1-800-343-0038 WEBSITE: GOFLYHOME.COM EU passes law on common charger for mobile phones, tablets by 2024 B r u s s e l s [Belgium], October 4 (ANI): Common charger for mobile devices will soon be a reality as the European parliament on Tuesday passed a new law requiring USB Type-C to be the single charger for all mobile phones and tablets from 2024, a press release by the EU Parliament read. The new law, adopted by plenary on Tuesday with 602 votes in favour, 13 against and 8 abstentions, is part of a broader EU effort to reduce e-waste and to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices. This move will be benefitting the environment and the consumers. USB Type-C port will be the new standard for portable devices, offering highquality charging and data transfers. By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB TypeC charging port. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops. Buyers will be able to choose whether to purchase a new device with or without a charging device. Following Parliament’s approval, EU consumers will soon be able to use a single charging solution for their electronic devices, the press release added. Under the new rules, consumers will no longer need a different charger every time they purchase a new device, as they will be able to use one single charger for a whole range of small and medium-sized portable electronic devices. Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, ereaders, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds and laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB TypeC port. All devices that support fast charging will now have the same charging speed, allowing users to charge their devices at the same speed with any compatible charger. This is a key development and encourages technological innovation. As wireless charging becomes more prevalent, the European Commission will have to harmonize interoperability requirements by the end of 2024, to avoid having a negative impact on consumers and the environment, the press release added. This will also get rid of the so-called technological “lock-in” effect, whereby a consumer becomes dependent on a single manufacturer. With this, the buyer will be able to make a much more informed choice about whether or not to purchase a new charging device with a new product. Dedicated labels will inform consumers about the charging characteristics of new devices, making it easier for them to see whether their existing chargers are compatible. These new obligations will lead to more re-use of chargers and will help consumers save up to 250 million euros a year on unnecessary charger purchases. Disposed of unused chargers accounts for about 11 000 tonnes of e-waste annually in the EU. Parliament’s rapporteur Alex Agius Saliba said, “The common charger will finally become a reality in Europe. We have waited more than ten years for these rules, but we can finally leave the current plethora of chargers in the past. This futureproof law allows for the development of innovative charging solutions in the future, and it will benefit everyone – from frustrated consumers to our vulnerable environment. These are difficult times for politics, but we have shown that the EU has not run out of ideas or solutions to improve the lives of millions in Europe and inspire other parts of the world to follow suit” Council will have to formally approve the Directive before it is published in the EU Official Journal. It will enter into force 20 days after publication. Member states will then have 12 months to transpose the rules and 12 months after the transposition period ends to apply them. The new rules would not apply to products placed on the market before the date of application. In the past decade, Parliament has repeatedly called for the introduction of a common charger. Despite previous efforts to work with the industry to bring down the number of mobile chargers, voluntary measures failed to produce concrete results for EU consumers. The legislative proposal was finally tabled by the Commission on 23 September 2021. (ANI)

An FIR has been filed and accused from both sides have been arrested. According to Vadodra police, patrolling is underway and the situation is under control. Earlier in August, two people died and six others were injured after a clash broke out between two communities at the Hulihyder village of Koppal district in Karnataka. The clashes had taken place after a Hindu boy went to meet a Muslim girl on the occasion of Muharram, following which arguments broke out between the two sections. Two people, who lost their lives in the alleged communal clash were identified as Pasha Walli (22) and Yenakapaa Talavad (60)– who succumbed to their injuries and died in the hospital. Right after that the people from both communities joined them and started beating each other. A total of eight people were injured in the clash, so far. The local administration had imposed Section 144 in the area. Further investigation into the matter is underway. (ANI) M a n d y a (Karnataka) [India], October 3 (ANI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-led Karnataka government on Monday and called it the most “corrupt” government. His remarks came while addressing a gathering during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra in Mandya. “Karnataka has the most corrupt govt in India. This govt charges 40 per cent commission from farmers, laborers, and small and medium businessmen,” said Gandhi. He also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also approached over the matter. “Karnataka contractors wrote to Prime Minister about 40 per cent commission, but PM didn’t take any action,” he added. Earlier in the day Rahul Gandhi on Monday visited the famous Suttur Matt, a pilgrim centre in Mysore, under the banner of the party’s mass contact campaign Bharat Jodo Yatra. Gandhi, the Lok Sabha MP from Kerala’s Wayanad, who reached Karnataka on September 30, visited the centuries-old Matt and sought the blessings of Seer, Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji, on the fourth day of his visit to the state. “A year passed, but the martyr farmers of Lakhimpur Kheri did not get justice. The reason is the same – as always the BJP is protecting the criminals. When we decided to do the India Jodo Yatra, the farmers movement was a big inspiration for us. This struggle will not end without providing justice to the food donors,” tweeted Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi is currently leading Bharat Jodo Yatra– the 3,500-km march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, covering as many as 12 states. The Padyatra (march) will cover a distance of 25 km every day. On Sunday, the Congress MP addressed a public rally amid a heavy downpour in Mysuru. Addressing the rally, Gandhi said, “This yatra is like a river that will flow from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. This journey will not stop due to heat, storm, rain, or cold. In this river, you will not see any hatred or violence. The river will showcase love and brotherhood.” “No one can stop us from uniting India. No one can stop us from raising the voice of India. We will go from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, no one can stop the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he added. Notably, Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji is the 24th pontiff of the Suttur Matt. Former chief minister Siddharamiah also accompanied Rahul Gandhi to the Matt on Monday. (ANI)
