As 2023 comes to a close, MUA expresses gratitude for the support received from its members throughout the year, acknowledging the challenges faced and milestones achieved. The year included events like Enterprise Agreement bargaining, disciplinary meetings, protected action, and Quadrennial Elections. Despite the stress, it has been a rewarding year, and MUA extends warm wishes for the festive season, encouraging members to rest and recharge for 2024.
The year 2024 will kick off with South Australia hosting the Quadrennial Conference in late February. Additionally, a shoutout is given to SA members who participated in the 2023 Working Waves competition in Newcastle, where although not winning the event, they secured a raffle victory for the second consecutive year. Special mention is made for Matt Morgan for winning the custom-made MUA Working Waves board.
SA Member Rob Duffield represented South Australia in Canada, supporting the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) dockers in their fight for wage justice and job security. The ILWU's demands included ending work contracting, protection from Port Automation impacts, and fair pay rises. On another note, the office underwent renovations post-flooding in July, leading to enhanced space utilization with repairs, new offices, and historical memorabilia display. The revamped space will aid in branch operations, training, and meetings in 2024.
