dancer, Alexander Richardson and created with lead dancer, Erin Scott-Kafadar. By pushing new boundaries in dance, PointeTango combines the intimacy of Argentine tango with the precision of classical ballet, creating a new dance vocabulary that is both intimate and bold. PointeTango emerged from the question: ‘What happens when classical ballet meets Argentine tango?’ Having trained and worked in both disciplines of classical ballet and Argentine tango extensively, Erin and Alexander challenged themselves to develop a new dance vocabulary of “pointetango” that respects the codes and connection of the Argentine tango “abrazo” (embrace) while searching for new solutions and opportunities to the challenges encountered when transitioning from heels to pointe shoes. PointeTango is the only dance company in the world to dance authentic, improvised Argentine tango on pointe shoes. The company’s work has been performed on cruise ships internationally, featured in theatre festivals and dance film projects and they perform regularly in stage shows and milongas in Buenos Aires and Canada. PointeTango has toured their original highly acclaimed shows: Para Dos, Into the Tango, Tango, to the Pointe and Tango in the Dark across Canada in the summers of 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 respectively to sold-out theatres. Their festival tours have earned them the prestigious Best of Festival award in addition to Favourite Dance Show and Favourite Duo, Best Artistry and the Patron’s Pick awards to name a few. In 2024, PointeTango produced a live 2-hour production of ‘Tango in the Dark’ with Payadora Tango Ensemble at the prestigious Grand Theatre of London performing to a full house and receiving rave reviews. PointeTango dancers Erin and Alexander were honoured to have acclaimed Montreal dance reviewer Victor Swoboda write a feature article about PointeTango Dance Company published in the prestigious Dance International magazine in January 2023. “They dance as one body, with grace and precision” ★★★★★ – Monday Magazine “Sultry. Intimate. Completely innovative.” – Forget the Box “Unlike anything you’ve ever seen”- The Vancouver Arts Review
Payadora is an award-winning ensemble that performs its own arrangements of a core repertoire drawing from Argentinian/Uruguayan traditions (tangos, milongas, waltzes, and folk music such as the Zamba and chacarera), as well as original songs inspired by that tradition. Comprised of musicians who are each musical powerhouses in their own right, this “superstar group” has combined their profound love of tango with their classical, jazz and world music backgrounds to create something entirely new. Payadora is officially endorsed by the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto for its adherence to the spirit of tango, and audiences flock to performances that convey joy, virtuosity, humour and intense passion. Since 2013, Payadora has presented concerts and sold-out shows at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa Chamberfest, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, Stratford Summer Music, Toronto Summer Music, Festival of the Sound, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Toronto Jazzfest, the COC’s World Music Series at the Four Seasons Centre and the World Accordion & Tango Festival in Victoria. Payadora has also collaborated with the London Symphonia, the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony and the Hannaford Street Silver Band, as well as with PointeTango Dance Company, which explores the intersection between classical dance and earthy tango. Their sold-out 2023 European tour (Madrid, Copenhagen, Budapest and London) included a live-to-air BBC performance. In the spring of 2023, Payadora’s third and latest CD, the critically acclaimed “Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango”, reached #1 on the World Music Charts in Europe, accompanied by rave reviews, airtime, and press coverage around the globe, including the BBC, CTV, CBC television and radio, the Bangkok Post, NPR, and RTE Irish Public Radio. “…The most memorable release I have ever had the privilege to listen to and review” (WholeNote Magazine).
