UNDERSTANDING TRUE COLOURS God has created each of us uniquely. We differ in how we communicate, make decisions, process information, relate to people and respond to situations. True Colours is a simple personality-awareness tool that helps us recognise some of our natural tendencies. It can help us answer questions such as: * How do I naturally respond to people and situations? * What are some of my strengths? * What might be my blind spots? * Why do other people sometimes respond differently from me? * How can I communicate and relate to others more effectively? Important reminder True Colours is a personality-awareness tool, not a biblical doctrine. Our colour does not define our identity, determine our destiny or excuse our behaviour. Personality may explain a tendency; it does not excuse ungodly behaviour. Our identity is ultimately found in Christ. ⸻ 2. THE FOUR COLOURS ORANGE — ACTION & FLEXIBILITY
Action • Freedom • Variety • Adventure • Spontaneity Possible strengths: Energetic • Courageous • Adaptable • Enthusiastic • Initiative-taking Possible blind spots: Impulsive • Impatient • Easily bored • May struggle with routine Growth question: How can I use my energy and courage while allowing God to develop patience and self-control in me? ⸻ GOLD — STRUCTURE & RESPONSIBILITY Often values: Order • Responsibility • Planning • Consistency • Reliability Possible strengths: Organised • Dependable • Disciplined • Responsible • Practical Possible blind spots: Rigid • Perfectionistic • Controlling • May struggle with change Growth question: How can I value order without becoming controlling or inflexible? ⸻ GREEN — KNOWLEDGE & LOGIC Often values: Knowledge • Logic • Competence • Understanding • Independence Possible strengths: Analytical • Intelligent • Strategic • Curious • Problem-solving Possible blind spots: Overthinking • Analysis paralysis • Impatience with others • May appear emotionally detached Growth question: How can I use my intellect while allowing wisdom, humility and compassion to guide me?
BLUE — RELATIONSHIPS & COMPASSION Often values: Relationships • Harmony • Connection • Compassion • Meaning Possible strengths: Caring • Empathetic • Loyal • Encouraging • Relational Possible blind spots: People-pleasing • Taking things personally • Difficulty setting boundaries • Avoiding confrontation Growth question: How can I love people well while maintaining healthy boundaries and speaking truth when necessary? ⸻ 3. DIFFERENT BY DESIGN The Bible does not teach the four True Colours categories, but Scripture clearly shows that God gives people different gifts, abilities and functions. “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:4 “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…” — Romans 12:6 Our differences do not have to divide us. They can complement one another. Think about it: * The Orange may bring energy and initiative. * The Gold may bring organisation and stability. * The Green may bring analysis and creative solutions. * The Blue may bring compassion and encouragement. We need different strengths. The goal is not to become someone else.
⸻ 4. PERSONALITY AND CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER Understanding our personality should lead to self-awareness, not self-justification. We should never say: “That’s just my personality.” to excuse anger, pride, selfishness, impatience, harshness or unforgiveness. God calls every believer to grow in Christlike character. The fruit of the Spirit includes: Love • Joy • Peace • Patience • Kindness • Goodness • Faithfulness • Gentleness • Self-control — Galatians 5:22–23 Our personality may influence how we naturally respond. God’s Word teaches us how we should respond. The Holy Spirit helps us become more like Christ. ⸻ 5. USING OUR PERSONALITY WELL In Marriage Different personalities can approach communication, decisions, finances, conflict and daily responsibilities differently. Instead of asking: “Why are you like this?” try asking:
Understanding differences does not mean agreeing with everything. It means learning to communicate with wisdom, grace and understanding. ⸻ In Parenting Children may also have different natural tendencies. One child may love structure and routine. Another may need freedom and variety. Another may constantly ask questions, while another may need lots of encouragement and reassurance. Understanding these differences can help us communicate more effectively. Understand the child without compromising godly boundaries. ⸻ In the Workplace Different personalities can bring different strengths to a team. Orange: Initiative and energy Gold: Organisation and reliability Green: Analysis and problem-solving Blue: Relationships and encouragement Instead of becoming frustrated by someone who works differently from us, we can ask: “What strength does this person bring that I may not naturally bring?” ⸻ In the Church The body of Christ needs different kinds of people: Leaders • Teachers • Organisers • Encouragers • Administrators • Carers • Problem-solvers • Servants We do not all have to function in exactly the same way.
“How can I use who God created me to be to serve Him and bless others?” ⸻ 6. REFLECTION Take a moment to consider: 1. What is one strength I recognise in myself? ⸻ 2. What is one blind spot I need God to help me address? ⸻ 3. Who is someone different from me whom I need to understand better? ⸻ 4. How can I use my strengths and gifts to serve God and others? ⸻ 5. What is one area where I need to become more Christlike? ⸻ ⸻ MY PERSONAL DECLARATION I am God’s workmanship. My personality does not define my worth. My weaknesses do not define my future. I will use my strengths for God’s glory. I will not use my personality as an excuse for ungodly behaviour.
I will give grace to people who are different from me. I will allow God’s Word and the Holy Spirit to shape my character. I am uniquely created, continually growing and useful to God. ⸻ FINAL THOUGHT Different by design. United in Christ. True Colours can help me understand myself. Understanding others can help me build healthier relationships. But God’s Word and the Holy Spirit help me become more like Christ. UNDERSTAND YOURSELF. UNDERSTAND OTHERS. BECOME MORE LIKE CHRIST.
