The atmosphere of the Wiki Marathon (Wikithon) at SMAN 1 Banjarbaru on Monday (8/26/2024) afternoon was vibrant and exhilarating. This was largely due to the participation of Emily Magaziner, Public Diplomacy Officer of the United States Embassy, as part of the BASAkalimantan Wiki (BKW) program. The presence of a "bule" figure in a classroom of approximately 100 students was indeed a rarity. Nonetheless, this also contributed to a more vibrant implementation of the Wikithon. Accompanying Emily was Pirina Vindhiarta, Public Relations Specialist at the United States Embassy, who, on the previous morning, had attended the launch of the Banjar Language Digital Dictionary at Mahligai Pancasila in Banjarmasin. Prize-giving session to the winners of the Wikithon Competition Under the guidance of Diang Anggrek from BKW, the Wikithon activity, as is customary, engages the public—specifically students—in assessing their knowledge of their mother tongue, the Banjar language. In addition to being assigned a competition to construct sentences in the Banjar language, which were subsequently translated into Indonesian and English, the students were also “evaluated” by responding to inquiries from the team. Emily had the opportunity to pose a question as well. “Can anyone name the title of a Banjar song?” she inquired in relatively proficient Indonesian. Hudan Nur, the BKW Coordinator, inquired, "Could anyone name ten titles of Banjar songs?" Initially, no one was willing to raise their hand. Eventually, three students approached the front of the class and each named several Banjar song titles, including "Pambatangan," "Paris Barantai," "Uma Abah," among others. The students who successfully answered a number of questions were awarded prizes consisting of books and t-shirts. This also included participants who won the competition judged by Rosida Ridha from the Banjarbaru City Dispursip. Emily expressed her satisfaction with the conducted activities. "Remarkable. I am pleased because they exhibit great enthusiasm. This is truly impressive," she remarked at the conclusion of the event.
