STORY-TELLING THROUGH ART

TOTO BISSAINTHE:

BY GRACE MARTIN ARTIST STATEMENT: I knew I wanted to research a Caribbean woman to feature, as far too often black women are left out of the conversation when it comes to women’s history & accomplishments. There’s not a lot of information about her out there, but she was a strong symbol of hope to the people of Haiti during a time of great political unrest, proving the power of art & music to make change. I highly recommend you go listen to some of her music – her vocals and arrangements are absolutely stunning and guided me as I drew her portrait. This portrait was illustrated by hand with fine point pens and gray markers. I spent an hour on the fine details, especially her hair and the shading on her skin. I aimed to create a striking portrait to highlight her strength and lasting legacy. Text was added digitally.

RIGOBERTA MENCHÚ TUM:

BY REBECCA LOPEZ-HOWES   ARTIST STATEMENT: I made my collage using construction paper and pencil to represent a traditional Guatemalan shawl which is woven by Mayan women still to this day. I have added images of Rigoberta doing her work with Mayan Women. I have added a flower garland of Nikté in Mayan that are traditionally used by the Maya to adorn the tombs of loved ones. This flower is also considered sacred for its medicinal properties.
