REL. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: I would like to welcome back all students and staff to Bulahdelah Central School. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our school community for the wonderful way they have assisted us in terms of collecting their Rapid Antigen Tests and with the wearing of masks. These are not normal times I know, and we are facing many challenges together that we never had to navigate before. During these tough times we would like to support parents/carers and students by waiving elective fees and voluntary fees this year (2022). Students in Kindergarten and Years 7 to 12 have also been given books and supply packages to ensure all students have the equipment they will need for 2022. Congratulations to the following staff who have joined us or are filling various roles at our school for 2022: • Deb Booth and Karen George - Assistant Principals - Curriculum and Instruction • James Schnee - English Teacher • Jake Kinnear who was successful in gaining our full time TAS (Technological & Applied Studies) teaching position • Georgina Cunich - Deputy Principal (2022) • Michelle Gray - Relieving Deputy Principal (Weeks 1-5) • Hayley Nicholson and Jody Mostyn - Relieving Assistant Principals (Term 1) • Brent Smith - Head Teacher Administration (2022) • Robyn Grey - Relieving Learning and Support Teacher (2022) We have had lots of excited faces as students came through the school gates last week and they have looked terrific in their school uniforms. 2022 here we come! Melissa Parrotta - Relieving Principal. Congratulations to the 2021 School DUX, Seleana Murphy. This prestigious accolade recognises academic excellence and is awarded following the release of the HSC results to the Year 12 student who achieves the highest ATAR (Australian, Tertiary Admission Rank). Information on COVID-19

Rapid antigen testing We will distribute packs of rapid antigen test (RAT) kits for all students and staff at the start of Term 1. The use of RAT kits is an important step to support the health and well-being of our students and staff. They are a quick and easy screening tool to help detect COVID-19. It is a simple process of placing a nose or throat swab in a chemical solution, which is put onto a scanning device. Results can be ready within 15 minutes. Use of RAT kits is highly recommended, but not mandatory. Parents and Carers Welcome to a new school year, an exciting time as our students start or return to their school journey. I want to share how we are building on our experiences of the last 2 years and continuing to safeguard our school community while keeping our school open, where we know the best learning happens. Instructions are included in the kits detailing how to use the tests, check the results and dispose of the tests safely. You can also download the instructions through the Therapeutic Goods Administration website. The user guides will also contain a contact number for the suppliers if you need additional support. We will start 2022 with a layered approach to COVID -smart measures that have been developed in partnership with NSW Health to help to minimise transmissions at school. The health and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our priority, and these measures are designed to help to keep our school open and our students learning in the classroom. These key measures include: · Rapid antigen test (RAT) kits will be provided to all students to help monitor your child’s health and minimise transmission of COVID-19 across our school. · Wearing of surgical masks indoors is required for all staff and students in Year 7 and above and strongly recommended for all Primary students. Masks will be provided by the school if required. · Only fully vaccinated visitors essential to delivering and supporting learning or wellbeing can come on a school site. · Students will be kept in their year groups on school grounds, with staggered drop-off and pick-ups, break times, playground and canteen access to minimise the spread of COVID-19 across cohorts. · We will continue to use good hygiene, enhanced cleaning, good air flow and ventilation in learning spaces, as well as physical distancing practices. Additional information · School staff will not be administering the rapid antigen tests to students. · RAT kits should be collected from school by a parent or carer and the tests completed at home in the morning before attending school. · Each student will receive an initial supply of 4 RATs to be used twice a week in the morning before attending school. · If a student or staff member receives a positive RAT result, they need to: • record the positive RAT result through the Service NSW website • notify the school of the positive RAT or PCR result as soon as possible • follow NSW Health advice to isolate for 7 days. Negative results do not need to be reported to Service NSW or to the school. Unwell at school Any student or staff member who is unwell and/or displays symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to go home and stay until they can complete a RAT or PCR test. · If symptoms continue, they should stay at home and take another RAT in 24 hours or have a PCR test. · If the second RAT or initial PCR test result is negative and they are displaying no symptoms OR they are diagnosed as another condition such as hay fever, the student or staff member can return to school. While this is not going to be a normal start to the school year, we know that being together in the classroom is the most effective way for students to learn and grow. Your child's relationship with their teacher is important, but as we manage potential disruptions to staffing due to COVID-19, they may get to meet more teachers than usual. 4

tests positive for COVID-19 Under the new close contact rules, schools are no longer included in contact tracing. I will inform the school community when there is a positive case in our school and advise families on public health advice, including monitoring for symptoms. Other key measures Ventilation We will continue to follow NSW Health ventilation guidelines that natural ventilation is the most effective measure so we will maximise fresh air flow in learning spaces through opening doors and windows. Use of surgical masks All primary and secondary school staff will be required to wear masks indoors. This approach is strongly supported by expert advice. Where natural ventilation is not sufficient, mechanical ventilation and/or air purification will be used and we will continue to use outdoor settings where possible. No vented or cloth masks should be worn. If required, surgical masks will be available at schools. Secondary school students will be provided with surgical masks as a backup when needed, which they are required to wear indoors. Air purifiers have been provided to schools as a supplementary measure to support common areas and can be deployed at the principal's discretion. These purifiers could be located in areas where high levels of student and staff mixing occurs, such as staffrooms, internal canteens, student centres and music rooms. Masks are also strongly encouraged in outdoor settings where you cannot physically distance. Your child can remove their mask when eating, exercising or playing a musical instrument. Primary school students are strongly recommended to wear well-fitted masks indoors. Cleaning We continue to have enhanced cleaning focusing on high-touch and high-traffic areas. Masks are also strongly encouraged in outdoor settings where you cannot physically distance. Your child can remove their mask when eating, exercising or playing a musical instrument. Physical distancing We will continue to follow physical distancing guidelines and maintain 1.5 metres distance wherever possible. Melissa Parrotta - Relieving Principal Visitors on school sites and vaccinations No parents, carers or visitors will be allowed on school site until further notice with the following exceptions: · Two parents or carers are allowed to accompany their child into school on their first day of Kindergarten or Year 7 or students starting at a new school. · Volunteers or staff operating uniform shops and canteens must be fully vaccinated. · Visitors supporting school operations and curriculum delivery must be fully vaccinated. · Allied health partners for the well-being of students must be fully vaccinated. All staff on school sites are required to be fully vaccinated, including having their booster when eligible. We strongly encourage our students and their families to consider vaccination when eligible. 5

This program supports students who need assistance with their learning as well as short, sharp, focused sessions for those who need a small boost to assist their understanding. Welcome! Firstly, welcome back to all our students and parents for 2022. This year our school was given a new initiative to replace Early Action for Success. Our school was given a 1.2 allocation with this position being taken up by Debbie Booth (Monday to Friday) and Karen George (Monday), holding the position of Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction. Their role is to support staff with their teaching and learning, as well as providing professional development in conjunction with the implementation of the new English and Mathematics Syllabus K-2. We are all hoping that routines and procedures get back to normal as soon as possible. So fingers crossed. A very special welcome to our new Kindergarten students who started school last Wednesday. It is pleasing to report that they have all settled in well and enjoying working in their classroom. Already they have learnt how to read some sight words and recognise some letters and sounds of the alphabet. They have also been completing fun tasks like painting, playing educational games that will enhance their learning. Welcome to Mrs Karen George It is with great pleasure that we welcome Karen to our team. Karen comes to BCS with a great wealth of knowledge and experience. School is a partnership between parents, teachers and students. If you have any issues or queries, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher either by phone or the classroom platform being used such as Seesaw and Class Dojo. Apart from being a classroom teacher across many different areas of NSW including high Aboriginal populated schools and small rural remote to large urban coastal schools, Karen was also a Deputy Principal/Instructional Leader for eight years and more recently held the position of Professional Support Officer for the NSW DoE (Department of Education), working within the Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnership Directorate. School Routines

Kindergarten children can get very tired at night because they are doing so many new and exciting things. For this reason, it helps if you keep routines like bath time, meals and reading routines as regular as possible. What your child learns each day builds on what they learned the day before. If your child misses school, their learning routine is broken, so they can lose confidence and miss out on building their friendships. You have a legal responsibility to send your children to school every school day. Getting to and from school safely How you choose to get your child to and from school is your responsibility. Your child’s school wants this to happen safely every day. If your child misses school due to illness, religious reasons or family circumstances, talk to your child’s teacher and remember to send a signed note explaining the reason for their absence. If your child arrives at school late or needs to eave early, you will need to go to the office to sign your child in or out. Pick the safest way to school and practise travelling the route with your child. Talk about how to be a safe road user. Keep our school community safe by: • modelling safe road use to your child • always holding your child’s hand when walking on the footpath, through carparks and across the road • using the safest spot to cross the road • never calling your child from across the road • parking legally even if it means being further away and walking the rest of the way to school. If you’re having difficulty getting your child to school every day and on time, talk to the teacher or principal. Share this information with your child’s carers such as grandparents, nannies and friends who may be taking your child to or from school. Picking up children at the end of the day When school finishes each day, your child’s class will gather at a regular place. Your child’s teacher will wait with the children. Make sure your child and their teacher know who will be collecting them each afternoon. This could be a parent, a carer or an after school care worker. Children can get upset if the person picking them up comes late. Check with their teacher about the best time to arrive in the afternoon and where to stand. Attending school Going to school every day is important, and Kindergarten sets children up for the rest of their school. 9
