STRATEGIES FOR USING AND MODULATING LIGHT

Transmission: The translucent lamp shade allows light to pass through, diffusing the light to provide a soft ambient glow. The mushroom mycelium’s ability to transmit light while softening the intensity creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Reflection: When the light hits the solid base of aged brass, it reflects off the surface of the polished and metallic finish enhancing the overall illumination, as well as creating patterns on nearby surfaces. Refraction: The design of a translucent top and additional open holes can cause light to bend as it Prototype Image Fig. 2 (Koenigs, 2025) passes through. This bending of light adds to the playful and captivating nature of the lamp. HOW LIGHT & COLOUR SUPPORTS HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELL-BEING

WARM LIGHT DAYLIGHT COOL LIGHT Mushroom Mycelium Using mycelium as a lamp shade involves cultivating the mycelium and moulding it into the desired shape, before solidifying to ensure safety and hardness. The result is a sustainable, biodegradable material The organic form of the mushroom-inspired shade adds a playful and whimsical element Warm 2,200k light emphasizes the rich, warm tones of bronze and the soft glow of mycelium The smooth, polished surface of bronze contrasts beautifully with the fibrous texture of mycelium creating an interplay between materials 11" Polished Bronze Polished bronze as a base is not only durable and elegant but also enhances illumination by reflecting light. Warm light supports relaxation, while proper illumination improves safety. The cozy atmosphere created by warm colours fosters well-being. 8 1/4" ON The warm, rich tones of polished bronze add elegance and timeless appeal. The reflective surface enhances illumination creating interesting patterns and adding depth to the overall lighting effect. Material colour analysis Fig. 7-13 (Adobe stock,2025) Nature: Imitating nature helps regulate the body's circadian, improving sleep patterns. The solid, polished bronze base provides stability Colour Temperature: Warm light (around 2,200K) can create a cozy atmosphere, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Glare Reduction: Using materials that minimize glare ensures a safer environment reducing eye strain and headaches. Colour and Mood: Colors can evoke different emotions, warm colours like bronze can create a sense of warmth and comfort. OFF Colour Temperature: Different colour temperatures can alter the perception of space. Warm light can make a room feel smaller and cozier. On verses off rendering Figs. 14&15 (Koenigs, 2025) Material Interaction: The way light interacts with materials changes their appearance. Smooth surfaces reflect light and appear slightly cooler.
