New York, June 1969: At that time, being oneself or liking a person of the same sex was illegal in almost all American states. LGBTQ+ people face constant police harassment and forced into hiding. The Stonewall Inn Revolt: On the night of 28 June 1969, police conducted one violent raid too many in a New York bar, the Stonewall Inn. That evening, courageous figures from the community—including transgender women of color like Marsha P. Johnson—decided to say "stop." Customers and residents of the neighborhood are rising up against injustice, triggering several days of protests. The Birth of the First March (1970): A year later, to the day, the very first "Pride March" was organized in New York to commemorate this revolt and demand equal rights. This is the starting point of the modern movement that we know today.
