The Prime Minister pointed out that there was a time when the majority of the defence budget was used to procure weapons/equipment from abroad, but his government focused on indigenous manufacturing to make the nation self-reliant. He lauded the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces for taking a series of decisions, including the notification of several positive indigenisation lists, wherein there are over 5,600 items that are being/ will be procured only from the Indian industry after designated timelines. He expressed satisfaction that India, which was once completely dependent on the import of defence equipment, is today exporting to numerous countries. It may be recalled that due to the persistent efforts of the government, the annual defence production hit a record high of Rs 1.27 lakh crore in Financial Year (FY) 2023-24. In the same fiscal, defence exports touched a record high of Rs 21,083 crore, an increase of 32.5 per cent over FY 2022-23. In addition, there has been a massive jump in defence exports in the first quarter of FY 202425. Rs 6,915 crore worth of defence equipment has been exported in the first quarter, an increase of 78 per cent from the first quarter of FY 2023-24, when the figure was Rs 3,885 crore. Referring to the 2016 surgical strike and 2019 air strike, the Prime Minister, in his Independence Day address said that there was a time when the country was a victim of terror attacks; but today it is bold and strong, with the Armed Forces giving a befitting reply to anyone who tries to harm the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country. He asserted that the nation is proud of its brave soldiers who selflessly serve the motherland. On the growing role of women in all sectors, the Prime Minister emphasised that women are not just participating in the progress of the nation, but are playing a leadership role. “Be it the Army, Navy, Air Force or space sector, we are witnessing the evergrowing Nari Shakti of our country,” he said. The MHA’s letter, addressed to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, outlines the need for increased security measures to manage the situation effectively. The deployment aims to support local law enforcement in handling the surge in protests and ensuring a stable environment for doctors. The step was taken a day after the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked to hand over the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the CISF as it heard the suo motu case of the rape and murder of the trainee doctor there. This move comes as West Bengal faces a period of heightened agitation, with protesters voicing various grievances. The CISF‘s intervention is expected to bolster security efforts and help mitigate any potential threats to public peace. The decision to deploy CISF personnel comes amid growing unrest and demonstrations that have prompted concerns about maintaining public order and safety. The CISF personnel will be deployed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as well as, the hostel in Kolkata, said the sources privy to the development. The move comes amid junior doctors from various medical colleges and hospitals across West Bengal on Wednesday staged a rally to protest the rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and demanded increased security in their workplaces. The doctors called for a swift probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the case from Kolkata Police as directed by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, August 13. August 23, 2024 INDIA THIS WEEK Friday India, Malaysia elevate ties to comprehensive strategic partnership, sign agreements on education, labour, tourism New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): India and Malaysia elevated the ties between the two nations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and signed multiple agreements in the areas of education, labour repatriation and tourism, during the visit of Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. PM Ibrahim was on his first visit to India since assuming office and it came at a time when India and Malaysia have marked around 10 years of enhanced strategic partnership. “Both Prime Ministers recognized that the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between India and Malaysia established in 2015 has helped in advancing bilateral ties into a multidimensional one. Recognising that the relations between India and Malaysia have evolved and matured across a broad spectrum of areas and that this deepening of engagement has significantly widened and intensified the relations, the Prime Ministers determined that the timing is propitious for relations to be further consolidated into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” the joint statement by the two countries stated. The two leaders noted with great satisfaction the deep-rooted ties of friendship and sociocultural linkages between India and Malaysia, and its peoples. PM Modi and PM Ibrahim held discussions on the entire range of bilateral cooperation including political, defence and security cooperation, economic and trade, digital technologies, start-ups, fintech, energy including renewables, healthcare, higher education, culture, tourism and people-topeople relations. The two leaders condemned terrorism and agreed to call upon states to reject terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Both Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction with bilateral trade and acknowledged that trade is an important fulcrum of the two countries’ Enhanced Strategic Partnership. They also welcomed the fact that bilateral trade has reached a record high of USD 19.5 billion. Both sides agreed to support and expedite the review process of ASEANIndia Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) to make it more effective, user-friendly, simple, and trade-facilitative for businesses, aiming to achieve a substantial conclusion in 2025 and to strengthen supply chains between India and ASEAN countries. The two leaders reiterated their commitment to respecting freedom of navigation and overflight, and unimpeded lawful commerce, based on the principles of international law, as reflected notably in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982. They also welcomed the signing of the MoU on Digital Technologies and encouraged the early convening of MalaysiaIndia Digital Council to guide engagement in the digital realm and accelerate collaboration in this area such as Digital Public Infrastructure, digital B2B partnership, digital capacity building, cyber security, emerging technologies such as 5G, quantum computing, cloud computing, Internet of Things among others, between the two countries. Reaffirming the importance of India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN, Malaysia appreciated India’s full support for ASEAN centrality and Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. Malaysia also welcomed more engagements between ASEAN and India through ASEANled mechanisms towards further consolidating the existing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the joint statement read. Both Prime Ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation and coordination at the UN, including at the UNSC, UNHRC, and other multilateral fora. The two leaders upheld that adherence to a rulesbased international system is imperative to ensuring peace and development. They pledged to work together to enhance multilateralism, reflective of contemporary realities so as to make international organisations, including the UN Security Council, more representative. The strengthening of Council membership with a focus on increasing representation from developing countries, including through the expansion of UNSC in both the permanent and nonpermanent categories will render it more effective in addressing current global challenges. India deeply appreciated Malaysia’s support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council. Earlier in the day, PM Modi also held a bilateral meeting with visiting Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim at the Hyderabad House. The discussions between the two leaders were held to further deepen engagement across various domains of partnership between India and Malaysia. F o l l o w i n g the meeting, PM Modi announced that the ties between India and Malaysia will be elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Stating that India attaches priority to ASEAN, Prime Minister Modi said India will extend full support to Malaysia’s “successful ASEAN chairmanship” in 2025. He also announced that India’s UPI will be collaborating with Malaysian Paynet, and the linkage of the two will be worked upon. He also announced that 100 seats will be specially allocated for Malaysians under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme. Ibrahim had arrived in the national capital today for a state visit, his first visit to India as the Malaysian premier. He was warmly received by Union Minister of State, V Somanna at the airport. He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi, laying a wreath at Delhi’s Rajghat following his meeting with PM Modi. Ibrahim also signed the visitor’s book at the Rajghat. (ANI)

T h e y unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism, and called for bringing the perpetrators of 26/11 Mumbai, Pathankot, and other attacks to justice. In his opening remarks at the third round of the India-Japan 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial meeting held here, Jaishankar also spoke of the need of reliable partners in a more volatile and unpredictable world. He said the bilateral relationship has assumed the form of a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in the last decade. “The logic of this evolution is our expanding interests and growing activities. As we both step forward into a more volatile and unpredictable world, there is a need for reliable partners with whom there are substantial convergences.” “As a result, we have consciously sought to facilitate each other’s endeavours, comprehend each other’s objectives, strengthen each other’s positions and work with other nations of shared comfort. Our Strategic Partnership will continue to grow as we embrace mutuality and display sensitivity,” he added. Sipriya Ranganthan as Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker Silver Spring, MD August 17: In a patriotic fervor with fellow compatriots, the members of the Southern Asia Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SASDAC) celebrated India’s 78th Independence day with Madam Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) at the Embassy of India, Washington DC, as the Chief Guest and Montgomery County Police Chief Mar R. Yamanda as a Special Guest. Chief Guest Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan delivered the keynote Address. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the SASDAC’s Independence day celebration. Ambassador Ranganathan reminded fellow compatriots of the importance of the celebration saying, “When we hear them talking about our great nation and about the privilege of being a citizen of it, we find in their words echoes of what our great freedom fighters used to say. Then we realise that we are part of a chain that binds the dreams of those who participated in the freedom struggle and the aspirations of those who will witness the nation regaining its full glory in the years to come.” She reminded the audience that, India was under a foreign rule, seventy eight years ago, and that “patriotic and brave souls took immense risks and made supreme sacrifices.
