End of Season Maintenance

After a busy summer bowling season the green will be worn and require important maintenance. During the Autumn months it is vital for groundskeepers to ‘put the ground work in’ and get the green back into shape for the following year. Without this early essential work the bowling green will not meet expected conditions in the coming Spring or Summer. Scarifying In early Autumn when the bowling green is closed groundskeepers must scarify to remove thatch from its surface. An automatic scarifier will make light work of pulling away any dead or fibrous grasses. Aeration Continuing with Autumn maintenance, the next crucial step is aeration. You can either purchase or hire an aeration machine for this purpose. Aeration involves creating small slits in the soil of the bowling green, which facilitates the circulation of water and oxygen throughout the turf. This process allows the grass to breathe, encourages healthy growth, and prevents issues such as waterlogging and moss accumulation. It is recommended to aerate the green every two weeks from October to March. It is important to consistently spike in the same direction as it promotes optimal root development and avoids turf damage caused by cross-hatching. Top Dressing Prior to top dressing, it is essential to mark out the bowling green and identify any areas of concern or low spots. We recommend stretching a cord tightly across the surface to highlight any sunken areas that require attention. The choice of top dressing material depends on the original root zone mixture, and it is advisable to use a similar substance to maintain a consistent profile. If that is not feasible, a proprietary 70/30 blend of top dressing can be employed. To ensure an even distribution of top dressing, utilize a lute to spread it across the green and push it down into the low areas, creating a smooth and level surface. If there are any high spots on the green, gradually reduce their elevation by implementing hollow tining, watering, and lightly rolling the soil to compress it. Nutrition Application For bowling greens, it is important that the fertiliser used contains a sufficient amount of iron to effectively eliminate moss, making its removal easier. During the Winter season, apply fertiliser www.eastridingturfcare.co.uk

twice for optimal results. The first application should be done in late November,

using a slow release Autumn/Winter. The second application should be carried out in early February, as it helps strengthen the grass and prevents moss growth. FOR FURTHER TECHNICAL ADVICE OR SOIL ANALYSIS PLEASE CONTACT US Fertilising the bowling green at the end of the season is a vital part of the maintenance program. Typically, the final feed should be in August. Winter conditions can create imbalances in the soil, primarily due to the plants’ luxury uptake of potassium and the natural leaching processes. To address this, it is advisable to replenish the soil with a corrective application of fertiliser during this time. Since the soil temperature will still be relatively low, the chosen fertiliser should contain a small amount of quickly available nitrogen, along with a slow-release nitrogen component. Additionally, plants require some phosphorus during this period to support robust root development, particularly if the green was overseeded in autumn. Mowing

Irrespective of the season, mowing holds utmost significance in maintaining a performance bowling green. As the playing season concludes, the mowing height should be raised to a maximum of 10mm. Throughout the Autumn and Winter, whenever weather conditions allow, it is advisable to give the green a trim. This practice aids in keeping the surface dry and minimises the risk of disease. Additionally, employing a lift-up blades run mower on a dry day can create a vacuum effect, further enhancing the surface quality. Overseeding With time, bowling greens are prone to experiencing wear and tear, regardless of their diligent maintenance. Therefore, it is recommended to follow a beneficial practice of applying high-quality grass seed during the Autumn renovation. This process should take place after aerating the green and prior to top dressing. Aside from the intense wear to which Summer sports surfaces are subject, the unpredictable British weather adds an extra dimension. Managing fine lawns and squares with close mowing regimes heightens the risk of material damage through intense traffic and increasingly through drought - a more widespread feature of Summers. Through ongoing research at Barenbrug’s breeding stations they are investing in future blends to help maintain the quality of the bowling greens. Subsequent Maintenance to Overseeding

Following overseeding applications, steps should be taken to help successful establishment of the young seedlings in the competitive environment of a fine turf sward. The following points are of particular note: OVER SEEDING GUIDE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST Nutrition: It is more beneficial to the emerging new seedlings to apply fertiliser after germination rather than applying a pre-seed fertiliser. This helps reduce the competition from the existing sward. Top Dressing: It is common to top-dress immediately following overseeding but this should not be considered an absolute requirement. If using top dressing as part of your thatch control programme, do not apply too thickly over the newly sown seed or emerging seedlings. Chemical Applications: Read labels on any chemicals applied to greens with existing seedlings or planned overseeding applications.
