NGOPVs: India’s Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and the IETM Advantage for Indian Navy Modernization
Summary Highlights
- India’s Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) programme envisions an 11-ship class intended for the Indian Navy, with seven units built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and four by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The fleet is designed to strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean, safeguard offshore assets, and conduct a range of missions including interception, boarding, surveillance, and EEZ patrols, along with mine warfare, anti-piracy, convoy protection, seaward defense, and support for special forces and helicopter operations. The vessels are also equipped to perform humanitarian relief, anti-poaching, medical support, and intelligence roles, and to undertake out-of-area operations and evacuations. (Page 2)
- The NGOPVs feature a comprehensive set of onboard systems and capabilities: essential auxiliary services (air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, fire main, salvage, ballast and oily water management) tuned for operational reliability; propulsion with two diesel engines, controllable-pitch propellers, twin rudders and bow thrusters for efficiency and maneuverability; a suite of sensors and weapons, including electronic warfare, a combat-management system, chaff systems, radar, gyroscope and GPS; armament such as a rapid-fire gun with Lynx U2 integration, dual AK-630 mounts with Lynx U2 integration, an electro-optical/infrared search and tracking system, and a bridge-based fire-control system. The ships also integrate advanced communications and navigation, including a modern bridge, Inmarsat and satellite links, and a robust platform-management and power-management framework, complemented by life-support and environmental systems, all designed for quiet operation through low-noise propellers, acoustic damping and vibration isolation. - Code and Pixels offers IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) solutions tailored to NGOPV projects, providing Level 4 compliance aligned with Indian standards (JSG 0852) and a unified, structured IETM framework by consolidating OEM data. Their Quantum TechDocs platform enables interactive, searchable, lifecycle-ready manuals, with end-to-end support from content creation and validation to deployment, training and sustainment. The services are pitched as a fit for shipyards seeking accurate, efficient, standards-compliant IETM delivery, and can be customized for proposals, brochures or mission slides. (Page 4)
