July 8, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK PM Modi delivers ‘strong message’ at G7 Summit M u n i c h [Germany], July 3 (ANI): In the recently concluded G7 meeting in Germany, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the necessity to address the Ukraine conflict in a peaceful manner through dialogue and peace and pitched India as a solution provider for the global food, health and energy crisis as he delivered a clear message to World’s richest nations comprising G7. While he met global leaders in what was a display of excellent chemistry he shares with them, PM Modi’s meetings with leaders of Argentina, South Africa and Indonesia, in particular, was an attempt to strengthen South-South Cooperation amid the geopolitical tensions. The PM’s two visits to Europe in quick succession had an underlying message that a multipolar order is in the making. Prime Minister Modi met several world leaders, including US president Joe Biden, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and Canada’s Justin Trudeau, among others. In his diplomatically packed two-day G7 trip he also had long meetings with President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, and President of Indonesia Joko Widodo. During their talks, Prime Minister Modi and the EU Commission President welcomed the resumption of negotiations on the trade, investment and geographical indication agreements. This was their second meeting in two months after she visited New Delhi in April. PM Modi is among the signatories of a “Resilient Democracies Statement”, issued by the leaders of the G7 nations. Stating that he had an “excellent meeting” with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and PM Modi said. “We discussed cooperation in key sectors like commerce and energy. We also had deliberations on furthering environmentally friendly growth for our planet.” “Glad to have met President Cyril Ramaphosa in Germany. Our talks covered diverse sectors including economic cooperation, improving connectivity and deepening ties in food processing and FinTech,” PM Modi tweeted after meeting with the South African President. He said: “Unfortunately, it is believed that there is a fundamental collision between the developmental goals of the world and environmental protection. Ancient India has seen a time of immense prosperity; then we also tolerated the centuries of slavery, and now independent India is the fastest-growing big economy in the whole world. But, our contribution to global carbon emissions is only 5 per cent. If you see the picture, don’t Indian Naval Warship Satpura, P8I aircraft to take part in RIMPAC exercise Hawaii [US], July 6 (ANI): Indian Naval Warship, INS Satpura and P8I LRMRASW aircraft will take part in one of the largest multilateral naval exercises, the Rim of the Pacific exercise (RIMPAC) at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. The sea phase is going to begin on 12 Jul 22 and will end with the closing ceremony on 4 Aug 22. For the multilateral naval exercise, INS Satpura reached Hawaii on 27 Jun 22 whereas the P8I aircraft arrived on 02 Jul 22. The harbour phase of the exercise saw participation in multiple symposiums exercise planning discussions and sports competitions, the Press Release stated. Moreover, the crew also visited the historic museum ship USS Missouri and paid homage to fallen soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during World War II at USS Arizona Memorial. INS Satpura and one P8I maritime patrol aircraft are participating in the exercise which spans over six weeks of intense operations and training aimed at enhancing interoperability and building trust among Navies of friendly foreign countries. 28 countries, 38 warships, 09 land forces, 31 unmanned systems, 170 aircraft and over 25,000 personnel are participating in the multidimensional exercise, said the official release by Ministry of Defense. The easternmost deployed Indian Naval warship, INS Satpura is presently about 7000 Nautical Miles from her base port Visakhapatnam. As part of its long-range operational deployment, INS Satpura is in the Pacific Ocean on her passage to participate in RIMPAC-22. RIMPAC22 is one of the largest multilateral Naval Exercises in which the Indian Navy is participating with INS Satpura, one P8I maritime patrol aircraft, and a shore contingent. Earlier, on June 15, INS Satpura conducted a special Yoga Protocol at Guam Harbour, USA. Apart from the ship’s crew, personnel from other foreign Naval Warships in harbor and personnel of Indian origin at Guam were also invited. Officers and sailors from the US, Singapore, and Philippines Navy participated in the Yoga protocol. As part of its long-range operational deployment, INS Satpura arrived at Guam in the Pacific Ocean on June 13. INS Satpura is an indigenously designed and built 6000-tonne guided missile stealth frigate equipped to seek and destroy adversaries in air, surface, and underwater. (ANI) New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over a meeting of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defense, over the Agnipath Scheme, on July 8. “The agenda of this meeting has been kept on Agneepath scheme. It is believed that in the meeting, the MPs will be given detailed information about the Agneepath scheme on behalf of the Defense Ministry,” Committee sources told ANI. At present, 13 members of the Lok Sabha and 7 MPs of the Rajya Sabha are included in this committee. Also, many senior leaders of the Opposition are included as members including Mallikarjun Kharge, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Sudip Bandopadhyay, Manish Tewari, Farooq Abdullah and Rakesh Singh. The upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, to be held from July 18, may see a heated debate on this issue. The Union Cabinet approved the Agnipath scheme on June 14 and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. The government had announced that 46,000 Agniveers to be recruited this year. It had said that the armed forces will have “a younger, fitter, diverse profile” to face future challenges. The Ministry of Defence, in its statement, had said that the Agnipath scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces. It will provide an opportunity to the youth who may be keen to don the uniform by attracting young talent from the society who are more in tune with contemporary technological trends and plough back skilled, disciplined and motivated manpower into the society. It is envisaged that the average age profile of the Indian Armed forces would come down by about 4-5 years by the implementation of this scheme. This is a major defence policy reform introduced by the Government to usher in a new era in the Human Resource policy of the three Services. There have been protests against the Agnipath scheme in some states and the government has announced support measures to allay apprehensions. In an exclusive conversation with ANI on Tuesday, Dr Sharma said, “India, during the last decade or so has created a number of digital public infrastructures. The beauty of these public goods is that the more you use them, the better it is. We have done a number of them at a scale which no other country has done.” Stating a few successful digital products made available by the government to the public, Dr Sharma said, “There are multiple products on top of Aadhaar, which is the digital locker – electronic consent, eSign, electronic KYC etc.” The top National Health Authority official also went on to mention ERupi– the digital payment solution launched by PM Modi in August 2021. “Last August, PM announced ERupi, basically a prepaid voucher, which is given for a purpose, so it’s basically direct benefit transfer with a purpose,” he said. “We have performed well in digital public infrastructure and we will continue to do more as we are bringing out new public goods like Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, Open Network for Digital Commerce...We have gone from a platform to a network-centric digital public infrastructure,” Dr RS Sharma said. He said, “It is the priority of the Punjab Police Force to take strong action against drugs and gangsterism and to eradicate them from Punjab thus providing better law and order to the people of Punjab.” It would be the agenda of the Punjab Police to improve the basic policing of the Punjab Police and New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against four accused in the conspiracy of killing of a Hindu Priest by operatives of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) in Punjab’s Jalandhar. The anti-terror agency filed the chargesheet before a special NIA court in Punjab’s Mohali. The case pertains to an attack on a priest Kamaldeep Sharma at village Bhar Singh Pura in Jalandhar by Kamaljeet Sharma alias Kamal and Ram Singh alias Sona on the directions of Arshdeep Singh and Hardeep Singh Nijjar–both Canada-based self-styled leaders of the KTF and designated terrorists, the NIA said. The case was initially registered on January 31 last year at Phillaur police station in Jalandhar Rural and re-registered by the NIA on October 8 last year. “Investigations have revealed the entire conspiracy was hatched by accused Arshdeep Singh and Hardeep Singh Nijjar to disturb peace and disrupt the communal harmony in Punjab by killing a Hindu Priest,” said the agency. The arrested accused Kamaljeet Sharma and Ram Singh had shot at the victim Kamaldeep Sharma, on the directions of Arshdeep Singh. Based on thorough investigations conducted so far, NIA said, four accused have been chargesheeted under various sections of laws. Those chargesheeted are Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Arshdeep Singh, Kamaljeet Sharma and Ram Singh. All were charged under various sections of Indian Penal Code as well as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and section 27 (1) of Arms Act. (ANI)SAS Nagar (Punjab) [India], July 5 (ANI): The newly appointed DGP of Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday conducted surprise checks at Mataur Police Station and Phase 8 Police Station of Mohali and said the eradication of drugs and gangsterism is the priority of the state Police Force. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar DIG Rupnagar Range and Vivek Sheel Soni SSP SAS Nagar were present at the occasion, said a statement by the District Public Relations Officer, SAS Nagar. DGP Gaurav Yadav inspected the Malkhans, barracks and canteens of Mataur Police Station and Phase 8 Police Station and inquired about the facilities being provided by the police administration. Highlighting the motive of his surprise check, the DGP said that he was trying to personally go to the police stations to check the working of the police force and see if there was any shortcoming which could be rectified. He said, “It is the priority of the Punjab Police Force to take strong action against drugs and gangsterism and to eradicate them from Punjab thus providing better law and order to the people of Punjab.” It would be the agenda of the Punjab Police to improve the basic policing of the Punjab Police and to improve the relations of the police with the general public, he added. FRIDAY JULY 8, 2022 9 Sale Ends 7-15-2022 Assam floods: People worried over post flood diseases Morigaon (Assam) [India], July 6 (ANI): Reeling from the flood situation that has devastated Assam, the people of the state are now worried over the post-flood complications including diseases. As the flood water starts receding, there is an increased risk of waterborne diseases through direct contact with polluted waters. Many flood-affected people of the Morigaon district have suffered many diseases that as high fever and diarrhoea. More than 600 people of Solmari Dekargaon village have taken temporary shelter on roads, schools as their houses are still submerged under water. “My house is still inundated by flood water. For the last six days, we have been staying at a school. We are very distressed,” Moneswar Deka, a victim said. Hemanta Kumar Deka, a local villager said that many people including senior citizens, women and children of the village have contracted many diseases. “The water entered the village 15 days ago. Water is now receding, but it will take at least a month till the lands dry up. Many villagers developed several diseases during this period. They are doing selfmedication. No doctor or medical team has visited the area yet. People are still in relief camps,” Hemanta Deka said. Sumitra Deka, a mother of a 4-year-old said that she and her son have also been suffering from many post-flood diseases. “My child is now sick, and I am too. Not only me or my child, but many others in our village have also suffered many diseases. We appeal to the government to provide some medicines.” Another victim, Banti Deka said that the relief material provided by the administration has proved insufficient. People of Kampur area in Assam’s Nagaon district are also worried about their future as the floods have left a trail of destruction. \The devastating flood hit the Kampur revenue circle in the central Assam district twice this year. Hundreds of families at Gejaipam, Kachua area have now become homeless after the flood washed away their homes and properties and they are now taking shelter on roads, and embankments by making temporary sheds. Many school buildings, and religious institutions in the area were also damaged in the deluge. After receding flood waters many villagers have moved to their areas, but they now see only devastation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a virtual event today for an Assamese newspaper, “Assam is facing the challenges of floods. Normal life has been affected. CM Himanta and his team are working continuously on relief operations. I have been in constant touch with the officials and the people there.” According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 9.68 lakh people in 20 districts of the state are still affected by the deluge. The death toll in floods and landslides in the state has now touched 186 this year so far. (ANI)
