Market experts said the rupee has entered unfamiliar territory, making it difficult to predict how much further it could weaken in the near term. The decline comes against a backdrop of elevated global uncertainty and thin year-end trading volumes, factors that are contributing to heightened market volatility. Currency expert K N Dey told ANI that the rupee has moved into uncharted territory, making future movements hard to assess. He noted that with year-end approaching, market participation is likely to remain low, even as volatility stays elevated. Dey added that even a potential revision of US tariffs may not provide significant relief to the rupee, and that fresh capital inflows are unlikely before mid-January. December 19, 2025 Friday India This Week PM Modi Meets King Abdullah II in Jordan, Discusses Counterterrorism, Regional Peace Amman, Jordan, December 15 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein at the Husseiniya Palace in Amman for delegation-level talks, during which the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed regional and global issues with a focus on peace and counterterrorism. Recalling the long trajectory of engagement between the two leaders, Prime Minister Modi referred to earlier meetings centered on extremism and moderation. Reflecting on those interactions, he recalled participating with King Abdullah II in a conference on Islamic heritage during the monarch’s visit to India in 2018, and their first meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations in 2015 at an event focused on countering violent extremism. Prime Minister Modi said King Abdullah II’s efforts to promote moderation are vital not only for regional peace but also for global peace, adding that both sides would continue to move forward concretely in strengthening cooperation across multiple dimensions. The Prime Minister highlighted Jordan’s consistent position under the leadership of King Abdullah II, noting that the country has projected a firm message against violence. He said India and Jordan remain aligned in their approach to countering terrorism, extremism, and radicalization. Linking this shared outlook to regional developments, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the Jordanian monarch’s active engagement on regional stability, particularly with regard to Gaza. He expressed hope that peace and stability would prevail in the region and said Jordan, under King Abdullah II’s leadership, has sent a strong and strategic message against terrorism, extremism, and radicalization. The discussions took place as Prime Minister Modi arrived in Jordan on a two-day visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II, marking the first stop of his four-day, three-nation tour. Ahead of the visit, the Prime Minister had said his engagement with Jordan would help deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Welcoming the Indian leader, King Abdullah II expressed confidence that the visit would yield tangible outcomes. He welcomed the signing of agreements and memorandums of understanding during the visit, saying they would advance cooperation and open new avenues for collaboration. He also expressed anticipation for the Jordan-India Business Forum as an opportunity to discuss business-tobusiness partnerships and joint investments in key sectors. Emphasizing the significance of the timing, the Jordanian monarch said the forum would help expand trade and encourage investment, adding that the visit would pave the way for a brighter relationship between the two nations and shared progress. Describing the visit as symbolic of enduring ties, King Abdullah II said it reflected decades of friendship and cooperation between India and Jordan. He noted that collaboration between the two countries has expanded across multiple sectors and said the visit provided an opportunity to chart new paths of economic cooperation in areas such as industry, information and communications t e c h n o l o g y , pharmaceuticals, Rupee Breaches 91-Mark Amid Foreign Outflows; Experts Say Volatility Likely to Continue Till January Rupee From Page 1 Oswal Financial Services, said a weaker rupee comes with clear tradeoffs. He pointed out that currency depreciation raises imported inflation, particularly through energy and commodity prices, widens the current account deficit, and increases the cost of servicing dollardenominated debt. At the same time, he said, a weaker rupee offers some relief to exporters by helping them absorb tariff pressures and subdued global demand. Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert, attributed the rupee’s fall to continued net outflows by foreign portfolio investors, subdued foreign direct investment inflows, and the lack of progress on the US trade deal. He said the Reserve Bank of India has largely remained on the sidelines despite the rupee’s sharp decline, even as the US dollar has weakened. Bagga contrasted India’s currency performance with that of other Asian economies, noting that currencies such as the Thai baht have risen significantly this year despite political and economic challenges. He added that India, despite strong domestic consumption, stable macroeconomic conditions and large foreign exchange reserves, has seen the worst-performing currency in Asia in calendar year 2025. Overall, experts believe the combination of foreign outflows, weak inflows, uncertainty surrounding the US trade deal and limited central bank intervention has pushed the rupee to a record low. While exporters may derive some benefit, the sharp depreciation has raised concerns over inflation, external balances and near-term market stability. agriculture, and energy. Prime Minister Modi’s visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan and marks a fullfledged bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister after a gap of 37 years. Following his arrival, Prime Minister Modi shared a message on social media thanking Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan for the warm welcome at the airport and expressing confidence that the visit would boost bilateral ties. Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan also welcomed the Indian leader in a social media post, describing the visit as a reflection of 75 years of close and enduring relations. He said both sides look forward to broader cooperation, particularly in economic, investment, and technological fields. Earlier, after reaching his hotel in Amman, Prime Minister Modi interacted with members of the Indian community and friends of India living in Jordan. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and said the affection, pride in India’s progress, and strong cultural bonds of the diaspora reflect the enduring connection between India and its overseas community. The Prime Minister, along with the Crown Prince, is also scheduled to visit Petra, subject to weather conditions. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this is Prime Minister Modi’s first fullfledged bilateral visit to Jordan. India and Jordan share strong economic ties, with India being Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. Bilateral trade stands at USD 2.8 billion. Jordan is a major supplier of fertilizers to India, particularly phosphates and potash, and is home to an Indian diaspora of more than 17,500 people employed across sectors including textiles, construction, and manufacturing. SC allows action against vehicles below BS-IV norms in NCR New Delhi [India], December 17 (ANI): The Supreme Court has ordered that the Delhi government can take action against owners who are using vehicles below the BS IV (Bharat Stage 4) emission standard in the NCR region. The court’s order aims to strike a balance between environmental concerns and the protection of vehicle owners who comply with prescribed emission standards, while enabling authorities to take action against more polluting vehicles in the NCR. Earlier, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the transfer of the suo moto case it had initiated to monitor the investigation and other issues including formation of a National Task Force (NTF) in connection with the rape of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, to the Calcutta High Court. A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma has also directed that a copy of the status report of the investigation carried out by the CBI in the matter be handed over to the parents of the deceased victim, after the counsel representing them, Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy, sought the same. The bench verbally noted that it’s better for the Calcutta High Court to take up these issues, as it is already monitoring the matter.” It’s better for the High Court to monitor and do things”, the bench said. However, the bench was of the view that it’s appropriate for the Calcutta High Court to take up all issues as it has already begun monitoring the investigation and the prosecutions in the matter. It noted that the High Court is also a constitutional court, wellequipped to deal with all issues involved in the matter. The Solicitor General of India (SGI) Tushar Mehta, also submitted that even the issues related to the NTF can be taken care of by the High Court. The Supreme Court had, in March this year, granted the parents of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case the liberty to approach the Calcutta High Court, where their plea had already been filed. A bench led by former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had allowed the deceased victims’ parents to approach the Calcutta High Court, noting that a single judge bench of the High Court is monitoring the case. December 19, 2025 Friday India This Week Sonia Gandhi Faces Renewed Legal Scrutiny Over 1980– 81 Electoral Roll Entry as Sessions Court Issues Notice New Delhi [India] – A long-dormant complaint alleging the wrongful inclusion of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s name in the 1980–81 electoral rolls has resurfaced, with a revision petition now before the Sessions Court. The matter, earlier dismissed by a Magistrate Court in September, is scheduled for detailed hearings in the coming weeks. A revision petition challenging the Magistrate Court’s September dismissal of the complaint has been filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi. The Sessions Court has listed the matter for hearing on December 9, reopening a case that the Magistrate had earlier rejected at the threshold. In its September ruling, the Rouse Avenue Court held that the criminal complaint lacked legal merit, relied on uncertified photocopies, and attempted to draw the court into matters outside its jurisdiction. The order emphasised that questions of citizenship lie with the Central Government under the Citizenship Act, while electoral roll matters fall exclusively under the Election Commission. The Magistrate also observed that the complaint projected a civil dispute as criminal wrongdoing, noting that the essential statutory elements of forgery or cheating were missing. On December 9, Sessions Judge Vishal Gogne issued notice to Sonia Gandhi after hearing initial submissions from Senior Advocate Pavan Narang, appearing for the revisionist. Narang argued that new, attested documents obtained from the Election Commission indicate irregularities in the entry, deletion, and reentry of Sonia Gandhi’s name between 1980 and 1983—before she became an Indian citizen. He contended that only Indian citizens can be enrolled as voters under the Representation of the People Act, and that the sequence of electoral roll entries warranted judicial reconsideration. The court also ordered the Trial Court Record to be summoned for a comprehensive review. The next hearing is set for January 6. The political reaction was immediate and intense. Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised Sonia Gandhi, calling the issue “a question of loyalty” and alleging dual citizenship concerns. BJP MP Sambit Patra claimed that “documents must have been forged” for Sonia Gandhi to appear on the 1980 electoral roll, arguing that her inclusion occurred before she acquired citizenship in 1983. He questioned what documents were submitted to justify her enrolment. BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also attacked the Congress, alleging corruption and insisting that Sonia Gandhi voted before obtaining citizenship. Congress leaders strongly rejected the allegations. Congress MP Tanuj Punia called the case a political diversion, accusing the BJP of manufacturing controversies. Congress MP Mallu Ravi said the ruling party was attempting to malign Sonia Gandhi’s reputation out of fear. Priyanka Gandhi dismissed the allegations as an “absolute lie,” insisting that her mother voted only after becoming an Indian citizen. She questioned the motives behind the attacks, noting Sonia Gandhi’s age and decades of public service. The revision petition stems from advocate Vikas Tripathi’s original complaint, which alleged that Sonia Gandhi appeared in the 1980–81 electoral rolls before acquiring Indian citizenship. The Magistrate had dismissed the complaint as an abuse of legal process, but the Sessions Court will now reassess the matter on January 6. (ANI) The Poetic Pen INDIA THIS WEEK- December 19, 2025 Why Waste Life? By Rajan George What is it worth if deception becomes my ground, if I climb by betrayal, destroying those who once sustained me— driven by doctrines swallowed at birth, raised a servant to unseen masters? Masters who chart no path for my good, yet lead me to the altar as offering— a sacrificial lamb laid down for their swollen ambitions, reshaping the world to fit their hunger. They speak softly, like trusted friends, training me to wager my life, promising heaven beyond the grave. Their honeyed words persuade my soul, and I obey— committing horrors at their command. Blinded by false glory, I proceed to crimes they would never dare commit. When I am seized by the grip of law, when chains replace applause, no hand reaches out, no voice rises in my defense. Then truth breaks through the fog: I was only a pawn—expendable and easily replaced. They feast in guarded estates, wrapped in luxury and pleasure, their riches built on extortion and deceit. They need me—and others like me— as fuel for their cause: suicide martyrs, gun-wielding tools, lives discarded, futures erased, destined for darkness and eternal ruin. But wisdom cries aloud in the streets, calling for discernment, for clarity. Choose life. Choose what gives life. Walk paths that heal, not destroy— paths that bless both others and myself. For when truth awakens the soul, when purpose is rooted in what is good, I will finally know— my life was never meant to be a waste.
