Second Home A child-centred, research-based daycare This project asks what it means to design for real childhood. Not knowledge—but confidence. Not decoration—but depth. The result is a space shaped for how children feel, not just what they do. It imagines a daycare as both a second home—safe, calming, and intuitive—and a second world, where curiosity and imagination are invited to thrive. Instead of focusing on curriculum delivery, the design responds to the emotional rhythms of a child’s day: the need to explore, to connect, to create, and to rest.
this. It encourages children to make their own choices while giving caregivers the visibility and flexibility to gently guide and adapt. Every decision—from the layout to the shelving to the surface textures—was grounded in research and developed to feel as human as it is functional.
capacity for lifelong learning. This design supports that by creating an environment that responds to children’s real developmental needs, expressed through the metaphor of the four seasons, shown below.
overlapping zones are defined by subtle shifts in an environment’s intention, marked by subtle decals and the ceiling feature’s colour. Children are free to move toward what they need—rest, connection, play, or discovery— while caregivers gain a clear, intuitive framework for observation and support.
