RESUS ROOMS GO LIVE Arrowe Park Hospital has unveiled the latest phase of its multi-million pound urgent and emergency care facility, with an advanced resuscitation area. This marks a significant milestone for the Wirral University Teaching Hospital project, as it is the first clinical section to be opened. Strategically located near the ambulance entrance for rapid patient transfer, the resuscitation area includes eight specialised rooms designed to meet both patient and clinical needs. Dr Nikki Stevenson, Medical Director, and Deputy Chief Executive said: “The new resuscitation area is designed around the needs of our patients. It provides optimum facilities to ensure the best and safest care is provided to our most severely ill patients within the Emergency Department.” Additionally, a new staff floor has been built, providing urgent and emergency care teams with a dedicated entrance, workspace, and wellbeing area. The new development is the largest undertaken at Arrowe Park Hospital since its construction in 1982. Clinical staff have been closely involved in shaping the facility and there is ongoing consultation with the public throughout the work. Janelle Homes, Chief Executive of Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said: “Providing quality patient care is our priority, so it is fantastic to see this milestone reached with the opening of the new resus area. “We are working hard on the next phases of the development and would like to thank the public for their patience while we have been creating this important new facility for Wirral.” Photos Clockwise: New signage, resus equipment, new resus wing, ED staff.
RICHARD RHYMER Role Summary: I’ve been a project manager within the UECUP team since March 2021, during which I’ve been quintessentially a jack of all trades. I coordinated and facilitated most of the things that the end users will use or interact with. This can be anything from a PC, right through to the signage that directs people where to go. I also worked with clinicians and technical experts to design patient flows, pathways, and IT systems. My next step is to become a paramedic. Proudest Professional Project: I have been involved in many commissioning projects over the years, but UECUP really stands out as I am seeing something being built from the ground up for the people of Wirral. We’re bringing a modern environment to urgent and emergency care as well as first class facilities for our workforce. Best Advice: Ask stupid questions and state the obvious. As a project manager we are often thrown in at the deep end, so I find this piece of advice super helpful to get me up to speed very quickly. Whenever you set out to do anything or implement anything, imagine a patient or service user is sat next to you - or even better, have them sat next to you. Unexpected Talent: Karaoke – anything 90s and indie I can blast it out. Cultural Inspiration: Richard is now training to become a paramedic. I have recently watched Independence Day – despite being your usual Hollywood action film, I find the examples of leadership, sacrifice, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity inspiring. No matter how bad my day is going, at least we aren’t under attack by aliens.
CRADLE Comfort Bags Bring Solace to Families Coping with Pregnancy Loss In a touching collaboration between Wirral University Teaching Hospital and Tilbury Douglas, the lead contractors for Arrowe Park Hospital’s new urgent and emergency care facility, 100 CRADLE Comfort Bags were created and distributed recently. These thoughtful bags, donated to the gynaecology ward, provide essential toiletries and informational material, offering hope and comfort during a challenging time for families dealing with pregnancy loss. Wirral University Teaching Hospital Joins Forces to Save Lives on World Blood Cancer Day On May 28, Arrowe Park Hospital hosted a large-scale stem cell swabbing event in collaboration with Tilbury Douglas and the cancer charity DKMS. Hospital staff, patients, and visitors volunteered to have their cheek cell samples swabbed, determining if they match potential recipients battling blood cancer. Another event will be held in September. Join us in creating a healthier environment! Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on Trust premises or grounds. Our commitment to health means that our staff will kindly ask smokers to extinguish their cigarettes if caught smoking inside or outside our hospitals. Need help to quit? In the fast-paced world of emergency medicine, finding balance can be hard. But the doctors at Arrowe Park Hospital’s ED have laced up their running shoes and are hitting the ground running—quite literally. Their new Run Club has sparked a revolution in self-care and peer support, proving that camaraderie and regular physical activity can significantly enhance wellbeing. Dr Chris McCoy (above right), a triathlon runner and one of the group’s original founders, said: “Socially, it has been great to spend time with colleagues away from the day-to-day pressures of the Emergency Department and get to know each other better. “It has promoted a fantastic team dynamic within the department, but also as junior doctors rotate to other departments, we have maintained those friendships and camaraderie. “It has been great to see members becoming more confident at running but also in themselves at work too.” Discover Arrowe Park’s Urgent and Emergency Care Facility in 3D We’re thrilled to present our new 3D animation series showcasing the urgent and emergency care facility on our web page.
