As people live their lives peculiarly and unusually from the way, they used to before, the will to
survive through the adversities it brings today is evident in every aspect of society. Countless
obstacles brought by the pandemic state of countries worldwide have arisen to challenges, both
physically, financially, mentally, and holistically. In the middle of the scenario, the spirit of education is
not sleeping. The seek of it is still present, and everyone has to deal with the new way of approach to
carry it out and the corresponding circumstances and risks that follow. This has allowed students
standing still to look at things from a new and different perspective and summon the resilient, braver,
but calmer versions of themselves. There are countless ways to do so, and music is one of the
powerful things to escape temporarily and hustle through the journey they chose to take.
Students can be seen having inevitable stress due to school works these days. Coping with the
education system changes due to the pandemic makes it more challenging and difficult for many
students. Releasing and relieving stress through music is a wide-known method and way. Music has a
broad genre wherein different people listen to the songs and tracks they'd like to hear that vary on
their mood and what they currently feel. Music connects you to the world that can make you feel
more at ease. Music is like a healing therapy for many. It has many qualities that stimulate one's brain.
Also, students listen to music because they sometimes felt accurate or relatable to some scenarios
written in the lyrics.
Music could be an escape from the darkness of your experiences. As people listen and feel
every song of a song, they somehow felt serenity within themselves, especially during their weakest
and most vulnerable state. It soothes and relaxes their spirit as well as uplift and color their moods.
Even for those who were not fond of music and sounds but once they heard of either a lullaby or a
love song, they cannot deny that they feel themselves in the position of the character in the music. In
this time where most of us are challenged and pushed through our limits because of this pandemic,
music can be one of the best alternatives to entertain and refresh yourself out, even just for a minute
or two. It helps elevate your entire system in different aspects.
Music can be our escape from reality. (In today's generation, we are facing a pandemic, and it
causes us to live and adjust to a new normal.) For a student, an online class can be exhausting and
gives a lot of stress. Listening to music can enlighten a student's mood while studying. When students
feel that they can't handle tons of school works, they can help them not think about school works first.
One of them is listening to music because it is therapeutic for all. Lyrics of the music can be relatable
to all that they can be engrossed in the sound.

The case where every student who
pursued education amidst the pandemic is
considered a tough choice. It is a matter
of weighing down options which is not a
good structure of education for everyone
of us. First, students will decide if they
shall continue with the new kind of
learning set up which is obviously
unusual
and
difficult
to
adapt
for
whatever mode of learning they will be
engaged and last is acknowledging the
fact of giving up their studies due to
affordability issues especially for the
less-privileged ones. Our educational
system and the issues related to it
became controversial on the previous
months as if online classes will be
implemented as a substitute learning
medium for students.
As all of us can see, the platform for
learning starting this school year and
until the day that physical classes will be
implemented
once
again
is
new
to
everyone which is why we call it the new
normal.
Different
universities
and
schools have their own strategies on how
to cope up and to ensure the quality
education for all students but we cannot
deny the fact that it became surprisingly
difficult for
everyone. Online classes have been a
legacy in the history of our educational
system. If I would be a given a chance to
describe it, I can state some pros and
cons with it. In some ways, it has a good
benefit because people especially the
students
can
learn
to
become
technologically
inclined
and
knowledgeable but they just need to be
responsible and well disciplined during
these online or
virtual classes. Meanwhile, it is not also
good and not an effective resolution
during these days because we all know
that most Filipinos cannot afford to have
digital access due to their financial
barriers.

ACADEMIC FREEZE: FOR OR AGAINST?

The academic freeze may
not be the best alternative
solution but it can be an
effective way until digital
divide
is
completely
resolved. A flexible academic
term and
curriculum will be seen if this
will be implemented. On the
other hand, academic freeze
could also work with the
policy
“no
vaccine,
no
classes.” The Department of
Education with the notice of
the government will suspend
classes
for
the
entire
Academic Year 2020-2021 as
vaccine is not yet available
until 2020 and
will just resume the classes
on Academic Year 2021-2022
with
the
same
calendar
period. It was also stated
that no student must be left
behind because resumption
of classes for this school year
will only cause burden to
families that may lead to
temporarily stop of studies if
academic freeze is not
addressed. They also said
that education is a right but
response to crisis
speaks
of
valuing
human
lives (Sape, et. al. 2020).

for the implementation of academic
freeze. In the website of change.org, a
petition was spread throughout the
country

raise
awareness
and
attention for the government officials

postponed the school year 2020-2021

was not administered by the concerned
and authorized agencies because with
the
accordance
of
DepEd
and
the
Commission
on
Higher
Education
(CHED), the school year will go on
without any hindrances.
Our country was proven to have
diverse thinking and
reasoning as seen in the previous
statements. If I were to take a stand, I
may
have two sides of it: the before and
after sentiments. At first I was against
with online classes that is why I am an
avid fan of the #Academic Freeze but as
time passes by, I became more aware
on changes in this world and for me the
online classes is one of the symbols
which
tells us that we need to embrace
metamorphosis because if we keep on
staying on our comfort zones, we will
never develop not just as a human but a
society as well. In this time, it is
already implemented and it is already
here so all we have to do is face it so
that we will not be left behind. For
those who were against, I am not
opposed to them because we all have
different perspectives but in my own
principle,

always

in

Uncertainties do come and go as we travel along the journey of
life; it isn't all cupcakes and rainbows; bad things happen, and
sometimes we can't do anything about it. Stress is something that can
significantly have an effect to numbers of people every day. Life
consists of hassles, frustrations, deadlines, and demands. And for
some people, stress is so common, and it is a way of life. Regardless if it
could help motivate you to meet a deadline and perform a task under
pressure, or if it is harmful as memory problems, moodiness, aches,
and pains, and eating more or less. Stress will always be there, and it is
sometimes inevitable.
However, in spite of it being unavoidable, we are still able to find
ways in order to deal with it in such a way that we will no longer be
affected by it drastically. Some people tend to sleep when they are
experiencing problems, but most of us are comfortable when we are
listening to music. But which of these methods can help us better?
According to Stanford University researchers, it seems that when
someone listens to music, it can change the function of the brain to
the same level as other medications. They also stated that music is
accessible, which makes it an easy tool for stress reduction. Music is
effective for relaxation and stress management---- music can
profoundly affect both of the person's emotions and body. Fast pieces
of music can make a person feel more alert and able to concentrate
much better. Musics that are upbeat can make a person feel more
positive and optimistic in life. Musics that have a slow tempo make a
person's mind quiet and relax its muscles, enabling them to feel
soothed while releasing all of the stress in the body. Classical music has
a very slow tempo, and listening to it can trigger even more
physiological benefits rather than decreasing the cortisol levels and
lowering the blood pressure; it can also increase the secretion of the
persons' brains' neurotransmitter dopamine, which can reduce
the stress of a person and, as a result, it’ll help oneself feel
more relaxed. This is why I can argue that listening to music
is a much better way to cope with stressful circumstances.

On the other hand,
sleeping gives us a temporary escape from
the problems that we are going through;
however, on top of that, I believe that
problems should be confronted and solved
rather than being escaped from. Music can
ease your mind, enabling you to develop and
come up with better decisions and plans to
address your stressful events while sleeping,
won't guarantee you any ease for the
situation. In fact, sleeping with crowded minds
every time you're going through a stressful
day is only wasting your time and hindering
you from making the works done, which
eventually leads you to more complex stress
situations. While sleep is vital for us and
sometimes link to stressful thoughts, we
should also lend some time in relaxing our
minds and freeing ourselves from
unnecessary thoughts that keep on playing
inside us like a broken record. One way to do
it is to listen to the music that we love.

In this time, I am still hoping for a good resolution for our educational
system like the academic freeze which will give every one of us an
ample amount of time in order to prosper and develop amidst this
pandemic. It will also give way to those unfortunate families for them
not to be left behind especially those future professionals who really
require a physical and applied expertise of learning and not just
through virtual rooms. Meanwhile, I am also a human being who
sometimes get tired of school works that is why I have my own relaxing
activities and personal coping strategies on how I will manage to
provide time for my self-development. I must admit that my everyday
routines are playing online games, reading stories and watching
youtube videos. Aside from that, I have found out recently that
listening to music or songs can help me uplift my mood and soothe my
soul and mind. Maybe others are not fond of those things or they feel
like they are not the type of people to be considered as music lovers
but take me as an example, I am not into music but every time I hear
songs which I can totally relate or the rhythm of the song is just so
refreshing and calming, I find myself most of the time being the
character in the song. Actually, music can serve as our escape in our
dark experiences because every song has its substance that will give
us either lesson or motivation in life. It is like the firelight in the
middle of the night that will lit our surroundings to have a color in our
journey especially now as a student, we all need music to help us in
our burdens.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected us in almost
every aspect of our life, and as we try to embrace the 'new
normal' slowly, we encounter a lot of challenges and
obstacles along our way. There is not a single part of our life
that is not affected by the said virus. One of its impacts is
evident in our education; schools have been forced to
forego traditional classes and shift to online courses instead,
making confusing adjustments on both the institution and
students. Currently, having online courses is the only way
out to keep attaining knowledge. I thought online classes
would be much easier since everything is backed up with the
internet; little did I know that shifting to online courses from
the traditional face-to-face system I'm used to is such a
struggle and burdensome. I met a few struggles, including
efforts in managing my time--- if I have settled down on my
bed and start facing my phone; I tend to skip school works.
However, if it is a classroom session, I will force myself to
attend the class even if I feel tired. But things are a lot
different--- I am more susceptible to procrastination
because I tend to avoid stressful workloads; struggles in
finding motivation, since I am not meeting my peers I'm
unmotivated to make a work done; lack discussion--- I tend
to remember the discussions rather than an excerpt from a
learning material. Discussions with other facilitators and
other fellow students help me to get my concepts clear.
Though many online courses provide face-to-face online
forums, discussions are more effective and cover many more
topics; on top of that, the environment where I spend most
of the time studying is not as learning-friendly as the
classrooms where I used to attend.

And with those struggles, my academic
performance was impacted. Workloads have
become a burden to me. I find it hard to answer
and learn from them.
Besides, I experienced a
significant increase in my
workloads. The sudden
change to online learning
created endless paperwork
and programming issues
and has been relentless for
me. I sometimes take the
holiday time and weekends to
submit it on and before the deadlines. The days
that usually provide some respite are also
consumed by piled workload, which brings me
closer to burnout most of the time. It is draining,
exhausting, and time-consuming. The work
never stops.
In spite of those, fortunately, I found some ways
to cope with the stressful moments that I had
gone through since the very beginning of online
classes. I am the type of student who can't study
without music.

Sometimes, though, my typical music is
just too much, which is kpop music. I start
to sing with the words, and then the next
thing I know, I'm singing and dancing
unto the tone and completely blowing off
everything I'm supposed to be doing.
Therefore I find a way to help myself
deal with stress without actually being
distracted from it; each person has
different types of music.
These days, my preference seems to fit my goal of overcoming
stress and anxiety while having the work done. Lo-fi music has
always been my buddy this pandemic, it soothes my mind, and its
imperfect tones help my brain focus more on what I'm doing.
Study shows that when we play lo-fi music, our brains begin to
pick out the differences in sounds and since the use of vocals in
lo-fi music is limited, I can find fewer distractions because there
are no words that I can sing with. Through this, I can easily focus
and finish my tasks, enabling me to experience less pressure and
give me enough time to enjoy myself.
