How Art and Design is taught in Early Years

How Art and Design is taught across KS1 and KS2 Media and materials used across St Pius X How is your child assessed in Art and Design? How can I support Art and Design at home? The planning, teaching and assessment of Art and Design across St Pius X is the responsibility of the individual class teacher. Art and Design is monitored by Miss Cunningham.

How Art and Design is taught in Early Years

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Art and Design is taught through

different topics. This gives children inspiration and background for their Art and Design. Art and Design is taught through Expressive Arts and Design. This allows children to experience a wide range of materials and resources. At St Pius X, Art and Design is taught through different topics. This gives children inspiration and background for their Art and Design. Art and Design may also be used to show learning in other subjects such as RE and English. Children may also have the opportunity to experience big art projects.

At the start of every year, each child is asked to create a

self-portrait and this will be kept in their Art Profile. As your child moves through the school, they can see how their skills have improved – right from nursery. Assessment also takes place in every lesson to make sure children have the skills and knowledge needed. This assessment is completed through Curriculum Maestro in line with other foundation subjects at St Pius X. Children’s work is completed in their Art and Design sketchbook. To develop pride of how far they’ve come, all children have an Art Profile from Nursery to show their self-portraits and their three favourite pieces of work from each year.

based on their topic. These homework grids help children develop their thinking towards a range of subjects, including the creative arts and gives them many different options to try. is important for children to explore their interests and develop their creatively. You could use any of the media and materials shown above and allow children to explore. Art and Design is everywhere so let their imaginations run wild…
