01 About Me Nur Syahirah Binti Jaideh I am currently pursuing my Degree in Architecture at Universiti Malaya (UM) after completing my Diploma in Architecture at Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah. I am interested in both exterior and interior design, particularly how form, space and materials come together to create meaningful experiences. I am inspired by the fluid forms and dynamic spaces in the works of Zaha Hadid, and I also have an interest in bamboo architecture and the use of natural materials in design. Through my studies, I enjoy exploring ideas through concept development, spatial planning, 3D modelling and physical making. For Mula Semula, I joined the Fashion Competition as part of the Universiti Malaya team, allowing me to explore architectural thinking through form, material, movement and the human body.

02 Why Fashion? I enrolled in the Fashion Competition as part of the Universiti Malaya team because I was interested in exploring design beyond the conventional architectural studio. I wanted to see how architectural ideas such as form, structure and material could be translated into something worn by the human body. It was also an opportunity for me to explore physical making and challenge myself to approach design from a different perspective.

Designer Maker DESIGNER Concept Form Proportion Material intention Visual outcome 03 ↕ MAKER Material behaviour Construction Tools Fabrication Physical limitations My main role in the group was as a maker, but I was also involved in developing and thinking through the design. While fabricating the piece, I considered how the form should look, how the materials could be arranged and how the structure could be improved. I did not simply follow the design, but also gave input when I noticed something that could work better physically. During the workshop, the boundary between designer and maker became less clear. I realised that designing and making should not be treated as completely separate processes. Making can become a form of design investigation, as the material and fabrication process can influence the final design decisions. The main difference I experienced was that designing focused more on the idea and visual direction, while making required me to think about construction, materials and practicality. However, both roles shared the same goal: turning our concept into a successful final piece. Make early. Test early. Do not wait until the final stage to discover that your design cannot be constructed.

My Contribution 04 My contribution focused mainly on the development and making of the fashion piece. I was involved in creating the structural framework, shaping the cardboard form, and experimenting with the rib-cage detail to achieve the desired form. I also explored the use of reused and natural materials, such as dried leaves, and helped with the arrangement and attachment of materials onto the final piece. Through the process, I learned that making is not only about following the initial design, but also about testing, adjusting and solving problems together as a team. My role was a combination of designer and maker turning our ideas into something physical.
