Have you ever looked outside on a sunny day and noticed that the sky is bright blue? The Sun shines white light, but white light is actually made of many different colors. As sunlight passes through the air, the blue light spreads out more than the other colors. That's why the sky looks blue to our eyes! FUN FACT ON THE MOON, THERE IS NO AIR, SO THE SKY LOOKS BLACK—EVEN DURING THE DAYTIME!

Rainbows are one of nature's most beautiful surprises! After it rains, tiny drops of water stay in the air. When sunlight shines through these raindrops, each one acts like a tiny prism. The light bends and separates into seven colorful bands. EVERY RAINBOW ALWAYS APPEARS IN THE SAME ORDER:

The Moon only appears to follow you because it is so far away. Have you ever looked out of a car window and noticed the moon following you? It might seem like it's chasing you—bu it isn't! The moon is about 384,000 kilomete away from Earth. Because it is so far away, it hardly seems to move while nearby objects like trees and building zoom past.

Rain is part of the water cycle. The Sun warms water from lakes, rivers, and oceans. The water turns into an invisible gas called water vapor and rises into the sky. When the water vapor cools, it forms clouds. When the clouds become too full and heavy, the water falls back to Earth as rain. Then the journey begins again! Rain helps all living things survive. It gives water to plants, fills rivers and lakes, and provides drinking water for people and animals.

Every popcorn kernel has a tiny drop of water inside. When the kernel gets hot, the water turns into steam. The steam builds up pressure until the hard shell suddenly bursts open. POP! The soft inside flips inside out and becomes fluffy popcorn. Popcorn is one of the oldest snacks in the world! People have been eating it for thousands of years.

A shadow forms when something blocks light. When the Sun is low in the sky, your shadow becomes long. When the Sun is high overhead, your shadow You can't have a shadow without light. A shadow becomes much shorter. forms when an object blocks light from reaching a surface.
