Chapter One

Mall Encounter & Friendship Bond Jaqine and her friends, Tasha and Candice, were at the mall shopping for prom. They strolled through the crowded mall, chatting and laughing as they browsed each store. They were checking out clothes, scented lotions, and perfume. As they walked through the mall, Jaqine noticed Jason talking to a girl she didn’t know. They were laughing, and the girl was leaning in closer to him while he casually rested against the wall near the game store. Candice and 1

when they noticed Jaqine had gone quiet. Candice followed Jaqine’s gaze and saw what she was staring at. “Oh no,” Candice muttered. Tasha, now also looking, asked, “What? What is it?” Candice pointed. “Jason’s over there with that girl.” The two of them quickly stepped in front of Jaqine, trying to block her view. “Jaqine, I know what you’re thinking about doing. Don’t,” Candice warned, trying to hold her back. Jaqine shook off her grip and stormed right over to Jason and the unknown girl. As she approached, she yelled, “JASON, 2

WHO’S THIS GIRL WITH YOU!”

Heads turned as she screamed, with Candice and Tasha hurrying to catch up. By the time Jaqine reached them, she was furious but tried to calm herself after already causing a scene. “Jason,” she said, more controlled now, “who is this girl? She seems to be getting a little too close to you.” Jason, looking nervous, replied, “Jaqine, it’s not what it looks like.” “Don’t even start, Jason,” she interrupted, raising her hand. The girl, rolling her eyes, said, “Seriously? You’re blowing this way out of proportion.” Jaqine snapped, “AND YOU ARE?” 3

The girl leaned casually on Jason,

looking bored as she inspected her fingernails. “It’s none of your concern,” she said, unbothered. Jaqine stepped closer, hands on her hips. “Oh, really? And you’re just casually leaning on my boyfriend?” The girl stepped up to Jaqine, now face-to-face, as if she were ready to throw hands. Jason tried to step in between them, but both girls shoved him away. The next moment, Jaqine and the girl were on the floor in a full-on catfight, hair ties and jewelry flying everywhere. Candice and Tasha rushed to break them up. Candice pulled Jaqine aside with 4

to her feet and led her to a nearby corner. “You need to leave, Jason,” Candice whispered. “Give her some time to breathe.” The girl walked off with a small bruise. After making sure Jaqine was okay, Jason quietly left as well. Tasha rejoined Candice and Jaqine, who were sitting on a bench by the large water fountain. Once Jaqine had calmed down, the three girls found a quiet spot to sit and regroup. “You really went off back there,” Tasha said gently, handing her a bottle of water. Jaqine sighed. “I know. I just... I 5
