L eadership is at a crossroads. In a world increasingly defined by artificial intelligence (AI), even forward-thinking leaders— many of whom already embrace lean thinking and continuous improvement—are challenged to adapt to a radically shifting landscape. The traditional models, which are built on authority, control and efficiency, clearly are no longer sufficient. Now, AI performs tasks once reserved for human expertise, from analyzing data to generating creative ideas. In these advancements, however, a deeper crisis has emerged: While machines evolve at exponential speed, leadership has remained linear, reactive and often disconnected from the human spirit. We are facing a profound leadership gap—one that risks eroding trust, alienating teams and amplifying fear rather than innovation. To thrive, we don’t just need smarter technologies, but we also need wiser leaders who integrate advanced principles such as Sensei Leadership, Higher Consciousness Leadership, Lean-AI Thinking and the V-Factor.1 It’s time to rewire leadership for a new era. The advent and growth of AI At the dawn of the 1950s, the dream of AI flickered to life as pioneers such as Alan Turing began posing fundamental questions such as “Can machines think?” In 1956, the famous Dartmouth Conference officially coined the term “artificial intelligence,” igniting alternating waves of breathtaking breakthroughs and “AI winters” of stalled progress.2 For much of the late 20th century, advances were incremental—until the convergence of big data, cloud computing and advanced algorithms catapulted AI into the mainstream. Fast forward to today, and AI no longer is a distant promise. It has become an active collaborator in workplaces around the globe, transforming industries with stunning speed. Once confined to automating routine tasks, now AI systems analyze complex data sets, generate creative content and even make autonomous decisions. From predictive analytics in finance to natural language chatbots in customer service, AI is woven into the daily fabric of business operations, augmenting human capabilities in unprecedented ways. This discussion offers a timely and often overlooked dimension of the AI debate—not just its effect on productivity, but also its potential to deepen empathy and redefine the human side of leadership. This seismic integration of AI into organizations brings not only new efficiencies, but also new challenges and opportunities for leaders. As intelligent machines take over more of the routine tasks, skills such as emotional intelligence, strategic foresight and creativity have surged in value. Leaders who might have been defined by decisiveness and authority now are called to be architects of empathy, adaptability and innovation. In this new era, effective leadership is less about issuing orders and more about cultivating a culture in which humans and smart machines co-create value. Leading today requires a fresh toolset—a blend of technological savvy and deep human qualities—along with a keen understanding of the multigenerational workforce. Forward-thinking 10 | May 2026 LEAN & SIX SIGMA REVIEW leaders invest in developing future-ready skills in themselves and their teams, recognizing that leadership has become a dynamic, ever-evolving discipline shaped by our symbiosis with technology. As AI continues to penetrate every sector, leaders who thrive are those who guide diverse, multigenerational teams through ambiguity, leverage AI to amplify human potential, and build cultures that celebrate adaptability and continuous learning. This is not just a minor upgrade to the leadership playbook—it’s also a fundamental rewiring of leadership as we know it, with higher stakes and greater possibilities than ever before. Effective leadership is about cultivating a culture in which humans and smart machines co-create value. Leadership challenges in the age of AI As AI becomes deeply embedded in the workplace, leaders face a novel set of complex challenges that test their technical acumen and humanity. Here are five of the most critical challenges reshaping leadership today:3 1. Navigating workforce anxiety and job displacement. The rapid adoption of AI has sparked significant concern among employees about job security. In fact, one in four workers now fear that AI will take their job.4 These anxieties—fueled by headlines about automation, high-profile AI errors and a lack of clear regulations—can erode morale and trust. To counter this, leaders must communicate transparently, offer reskilling opportunities and define AI’s role in the organization clearly. Microsoft’s leadership, for example, envisions a future in which every employee manages an AI assistant rather than being replaced by one5—an approach that reframes AI as an empowering tool under human direction. 2. Upholding ethical standards and combating AI bias. As AI systems gain influence in decision making, the risk of algorithmic bias and unethical outcomes grows. Already, there have been high-profile incidents of AI inadvertently perpetuating biases, underscoring that ethical leadership around AI now is a critical expectation, not a bonus. Leaders must champion fairness by ensuring diverse training data, implementing regular bias audits and promoting transparency in how algorithms make decisions. In the age of AI, ethical oversight is not optional—it’s a core responsibility of leadership. 3. Bridging generational divides in AI adoption. Today’s workforce spans generations with varying comfort levels toward technology.

tools eagerly, while older generations might be more cautious or require additional training to adapt. Great leaders recognize these gaps and foster an environment of mutual learning. This can include pairing tech-savvy staff with veteran team members for cross-generational mentoring, offering inclusive training programs and ensuring no one feels left behind. By uniting digital natives and seasoned professionals, leaders can create a balanced approach to AI integration across teams. 4. Redefining leadership roles in an AI-enhanced environment. The very role of a leader is evolving in organizations that use AI heavily. Leaders no longer are just managers of people; they also must be stewards of AI-driven initiatives. This means translating complex data insights from AI into actionable strategy and doubling down on the uniquely human skills that machines cannot replicate, such as creativity, critical thinking and emotional intelligence. Some forward-looking organizations even are establishing new C-suite positions (such as chief AI officer) to ensure the AI strategy aligns with broader business goals. In short, leaders must expand their role to oversee not just teams, but also the human-AI collaboration itself. 5. Ensuring transparency and building trust in AI systems. As AI takes on greater authority in decisions—from hiring to resource allocation—transparency and trust become paramount. If employees and customers don’t understand how an AI arrived at a recommendation, it can breed mistrust and resistance. Therefore, leaders must insist on explainable AI, set clear guidelines about what AI will and won’t do, and involve stakeholders early when implementing AI solutions. Maintaining human oversight also is vital to guard against blind trust in algorithms. By demystifying AI processes and communicating their capabilities and limits openly, leaders build the trust needed for successful human-AI partnerships. By proactively tackling these challenges, leaders can position themselves—and their organizations—to not only mitigate risks, but also unleash the full potential of an AI-empowered workforce. Modern leadership tools While personal traits and powers set great leaders apart, thriving in the age of AI also calls for new frameworks and tools to put those qualities into practice. As AI reshapes the business landscape, leaders must not only manage technology, but also inspire and align their people toward enduring quality and excellence. Through research and leadership experience, four high-impact leadership tools are critical for success in this new era: 1. Sensei Leadership. 2. Higher Consciousness Leadership. 3. Lean-AI Thinking. 4. The “V-Factor” (the power of visualization). Together, these tools form a foundation for achieving extraordinary results while upholding the highest standards of innovation, human dignity and sustainable success. Sensei Leadership: Leading with wisdom and empathy True leadership is no longer about command and control. It is about leading with wisdom and compassion. Sensei Leadership is rooted in the Japanese word sensei, meaning “one who has gone before.” This approach urges leaders to become master teachers and mentors rather than traditional bosses.6 The sensei leader serves as a guide, | LEAN & SIX SIGMA REVIEW asq.org/pub/sixsigma 11

using experience and insight to help others navigate uncertainty and unlock their potential instead of simply issuing orders. Through Sensei Leadership, a leader fosters an environment of trust, respect and continuous learning. The emphasis shifts from telling to teaching. Rather than dictating every move, the leader empowers team members to think critically and grow. This style has proven essential in an AI-driven world where collaboration, creativity and emotional intelligence are critical success factors—areas in which humans excel, and machines cannot replace personal touch. Organizations that embrace Sensei Leadership often report higher employee engagement, stronger innovation and superior quality outcomes. They understand that excellence cannot be mandated from the top; it must be cultivated through empowerment and mentorship at every level. Emerging leaders should remember that the true measure of leadership is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create. Higher Consciousness Leadership: Elevating purpose and awareness In a world increasingly influenced by intelligent machines, great leaders anchor their organizations in higher purpose and values. Higher Consciousness Leadership is about cultivating a deep awareness of oneself, others and the broader effect of every decision. Achieving true excellence requires moving beyond transactional, short-term thinking and calls for leaders to elevate their perspective and lead with vision, empathy and integrity. Developing this higher consciousness means strengthening your emotional intelligence, nurturing empathy across the organization and maintaining an unwavering commitment to ethical principles. This is not a “soft” or abstract ideal—it is a strategic imperative in an AI-powered future in which an organization’s human element becomes its greatest differentiator. Leaders operating at a higher consciousness level align their teams around a shared vision of quality, responsibility and positive societal Organizations that invest in consciousness-based leadership are better positioned to achieve long-term success. 12 | May 2026 LEAN & SIX SIGMA REVIEW

enabling organizations to sustain excellence even amid disruption and change. Organizations that invest in consciousness-based leadership are better positioned to attract top talent, earn genuine loyalty and achieve long-term success because employees and stakeholders feel connected to a mission that transcends the bottom line. Lean-AI Thinking: Driving continuous improvement through intelligent simplicity Lean-AI Thinking has been adopted as a strategic approach to improve organizational performance by combining the principles of leadership and lean thinking with the capabilities of AI. At Toyota, Lean-AI Thinking has been applied to optimize production, reduce waste and improve quality. AI supports predictive maintenance and supply chain efficiency, while employees remain central to problem solving.7 This balance has led to greater agility and sustained continuous improvement. Unlocking the V-Factor: The power of visualization Among all the emerging leadership tools, the power of visualization—what I call the “V-Factor”—may be the most critical of all.8 In this context, visualization is not simply a motivational exercise; it is a disciplined strategic practice for leaders. By creating vivid mental images of their desired future outcomes, leaders effectively program their minds to stay focused and aligned with those goals. In the V-Factor framework, visualization becomes a daily habit—a way to align thoughts, actions and resources toward manifesting a clear vision of excellence. In-depth research of the V-Factor shows that intentional visualization can help rewire neural pathways, enhancing creativity, improving decision making and accelerating problem-solving abilities. Neuroscience has long used the concept of mental rehearsal, and the same idea applies in leadership. By consistently envisioning success, leaders train themselves to recognize opportunities and anticipate challenges ahead. In the context of AI—in which the pace of change can feel overwhelming—visualization empowers leaders to remain centered, see the forest for the trees and maintain a clear, inspiring direction for their teams. Organizations that embed visualization practices into their culture often report stronger strategic alignment, heightened innovation and a more energized workforce. When leaders regularly visualize excellence, that clarity cascades throughout the organization, creating a culture in which high quality is not just an aspiration, but also an expectation. Often, the V-Factor is the catalyst that helps transform ambitious ideas into tangible realities. Without a clear and compelling vision, even the most talented teams can flounder. With it, organizations can achieve what once seemed impossible. By mastering these three modern tools of leadership, leaders equip themselves to uphold the highest standards of quality and performance even as technology evolves. Those who embrace these approaches not only will survive the coming changes, but also will thrive—guiding their organizations into a future defined by innovation, resilience and purpose-driven success. Harness the AI revolution In an environment in which change is relentless and uncertainty is inevitable, it is no longer enough for leaders to react; they must proactively anticipate, shape and elevate. Examples of forward-thinking organizations such as Microsoft and Toyota demonstrate that blending technological savvy with human-centered vision creates a powerful formula for success. Organizations that embrace the principles outlined earlier tend to be more resilient and become inspiring places to work. They turn into beacons of excellence in which innovation thrives, collaboration deepens and human potential is fully realized. Ultimately, leadership in the age of AI is not merely about managing technology—it also is about lifting humanity to its highest form of expression. By evolving with courage, wisdom and heart, today’s leaders can harness the AI revolution as a force multiplier for human achievement, guiding their teams and societies into a new era of prosperity and purpose.
