The BJP-led NDA is poised to win 291 seats and the INDIA bloc 234 with the election turning out to be much close than predicted by the exit polls which gave an huge majority to the ruling alliance at the Centre. Other parties are slated to win 18 seats. With 291 seats in its kitty, NDA will be 17 more than the majority mark of 272 in the Lok Sabha. BJP is slated to win 240 seats on its own and the party will be dependent on its allies, including TDP and JD-U, for the stability of its government. Apart from its clean sweep in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the best news for BJP came from Odisha where it is poised to 19 of 21 Lok Sabha seats and will also form its first government. BJP‘s campaign banking on “Odisha asmita” was successful in ousting over two-decade-old Naveen Patnaik government from the state. The BJP and its allies TDP and Janasena Party did well in the Andhra Pradesh, winning 21 of 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state. TDP is poised win 16 seats, BJP three and Janasena Party two. The alliance smashed the YSCRP New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): The final count for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections has concluded, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 240 seats, far fewer than had been expected, however, prevailing over the Opposition, Congress, which won 99 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term, but the BJP will need to rely on the support of other parties in his coalition – JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP’s chief Chandrababu Naidu, falling 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark – a stunning blow for the PM, who had hoped for a landslide victory ‘400 paar’. For the first time, since the Bharatiya Janata Party swept to power in 2014, it did not secure a majority on its own — far fewer than the record 303 it won in the 2019 election. In the face of the surprising drop in the BJP‘s support, the Opposition INDIA bloc claimed they had won a victory of sorts, Congress said that the election had been a “moral and political loss” for PM Modi. Several other parties, United People’s Party Liberal, Asom Gana Parishad, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), Kerala Congress, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Voice of the People Party, Zoram People’s Movement, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, Bharat Adivasi Party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), Apna Dal (Soneylal), AJSU Party and All India MajlisE-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured 1 seat each. The BJP‘s tally of 240 seats marks a decrease from previous elections, ousting it from power with TDP alone poised to win a huge 135 seats in the 175member assembly. In his remarks, after most of the results came in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the BJP-led NDA will form its third successive government and that it is the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat, of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’ and of the strong faith of people in India’s Constitution. PM Modi said at the party’s central office that it is the first time after 1962 that a government that completed two full tenures has got a third successive term in office. He said “new history” has been created after six decades. The Samajwadi Party reduced the BJP‘s count to 35 from 62 seats in 2019. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured 29 seats, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 22 seats, and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured 16 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) secured 7 seats and is leading in 1 seat. Other notable results include Janata Dal (United) – JD(U) with 12 seats, Shiv Sena (Uddhav while Congress increased its count from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 in 2024. The BJP faced setbacks in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan struggled in the south, and saw limited success in West Bengal. However, it triumphed in Odisha, winning 20 out of 21 seats, with Congress securing the remaining seat and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) failing to win any. In Bihar, the Congress RID alliance failed to enthuse voters, and the NDA alliance held its own. A meeting of the NDA with its two biggest allies, TDP and JD(U), and the meeting of the INDIA bloc has been scheduled for today to discuss the way forward. (ANI)

The Commissioner said that as of June 2, a total of 141 alleged sunstroke death cases have been reported by the Collectors out of which 26 cases are confirmed due to sunstroke and 8 cases are not due to sunstroke. “During last 24 hours, 6 alleged sunstroke death cases have been reported by the Collectors. 4 sunstroke death cases have been confirmed and 12 cases were reported as not due to sun stroke death out of the list pending with the Districts,” the release said. In April, 18 cities of the state recorded above 41 degrees Celsius with the coal mining region of Talcher recording the highest at 43.2 degrees Celsius, said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official. Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the situation of the ongoing heatwave in the country and the preparedness for the onset of monsoon. The Prime Minister was briefed that as per IMD forecasts, the heat wave is likely to continue in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. This year, the monsoon is likely to be normal and above normal in most parts of the country and below normal in parts of Peninsular India, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated. (ANI)

June 7, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Indian American Bruhat Soma wins 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee By Reena Bhardwaj | Maryland [US], May 31 (ANI): Bruhat Soma, a seventh grader, claimed the US National Spelling Bee champion title along with a Scripps Cup trophy and a check for USD 50,000 after correctly spelling a 90-second spell off against the second runners up 12-year-old Faizan Zaki from Texas. 12-year-old Bruhat spelled 29 words correctly in the tiebreaker, beating Zaki by nine, to win the title on Thursday night. His winning word was “abseil,” meaning “a descent in mountaineering by means of a rope looped over a projection above.” Bruhat went first, and after he got through 30 words, it appeared like it would be impossible to beat. Faizan’s pace was more uneven at the outset. He attempted 25 words but flubbed four of them. The Scripps National Spelling Bee attracted 11 million contestants from around the world, and Soma emerged as one of the most confident finalists. He is the 28th IndianAmerican to have held the title. The 12-year-old beat 228 other competitors, including 7 finalists on Thursday night. Bruhat previously competed in 2022 (tied for 163rd place) and 2023 (tied for 74th place). According to his profile, Bruhat is a multifaceted person with many interests and hobbies. He loves to play and watch basketball, and his favourite player is LeBron James. He also likes to play badminton and Ping-Pong, which clearly shows his passion for sports. Bruhat also has a passion for music, playing snare drum in his middle school band. He is an avid reader who will devour any book on which he can get his hands. The champions’ parents and sisters were also present at the event and said that they were very proud of their son’s accomplishment. Bruhat mother also shared that her son has a sharp memory and has memorized 80 per cent of the Bhagwat Gita. The preliminary rounds took place on Wednesday, while the quarterfinals and semifinals followed on Thursday. This year, six of the eight finalists are of South Asian descent including Indian Americans. Over the past 20 years, Indian Americans have come to dominate the Scripps National Spelling Bee – a group that makes up about 1.3 per cent of the US population. And, yeah, the Bhagavad Gita is 700 slokas. And then they teach, like, a few slokas per class, and then we memorized them,” Soma told ANI. “I slowly started memorising Bhagavad Gita, then I started doing spelling a bit more but now I am going to continue finishing the Bhagavad Gita... I do believe (in divine power) because God makes several things happen,” he added. Describing his heritage and roots, 12-yearold Soma said he is from Telangana and said that he was very excited to know his relatives were rooting for him. He said, “So, in India, I’m from Telangana, and I’ll probably go back in any summer, like, for vacation, or one of my relatives, they’re planning her wedding, so I might go back then, but, yeah, it depends. But I’ll probably go back pretty soon.” Expressing his excitement at winning the championship, Bruhat shared, “When I won, I was excited. I was really happy because, for the past year, I’ve been working hard. So when I just won, it was like a dream come true.” Being of IndianAmerican descent, Bruhat’s victory holds special significance for many in India who were rooting for him. He told ANI, “A lot of my relatives are in India, most of them are in India. They’ve sent congratulations. A lot of them watch the video. So, yeah, that’s pretty exciting to know that all of my relatives back in India were rooting for me.” Despite winning a significant prize of USD 50,000, Bruhat intends to donate the amount to a worthy cause. “Well, I mean, for the USD 50,000, I’ve decided to donate it to a good cause, but I don’t know the cause yet. But yeah, it will be for a good cause,” he said. Looking ahead, Bruhat aspires to become a doctor and believes that his championship win will aid him in achieving his goal. “Yeah, I want to be a doctor when I grow up, and this championship is going to help me get into a good university to study medicine better,” he underlined. This is the victory of people and the democracy. We were saying that the fight is Modi vs the people. In the 18th Lok Sabha election, we humbly accept the result. People have not given a full majority to any party. BJP asked to vote for one person, the mandate has gone against Modi. It is his political and moral loss. The person who sought votes on his name, it’s a huge loss for him,” he said at a press conference. Party leader Rahul Gandhi, who also addressed the press conference, said that a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders will be held tomorrow to decide the next course of action. The Congress leaders did not directly answer if they will take role of opposition and said a decision will be taken after consulting other members of INDIA bloc. The counting of votes of Lok Sabha election was taken up on Tuesday after a marathon seven-phased election and states presented contrasting pictures with BJP suffering losses in crucial Hindi heartland states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana. Some big names from the BJP including Union Minister Smriti Irani, Maneka Gandhi, K Annamalai, Sanjeev Balyan, Arjun Munda and Ajay Mishra Teni lost the polls. It won 282 seats in 2014 and improved its tally to 303 seats in 2019 elections. The BJP had set a target of winning 370 seats in the 2024 general elections. AAP, which contested 22 seats, has not done well and could win only three seats while drawing a blank in Delhi where it rules. The most remarkable story for opposition is from Uttar Pradesh where the Samajwadi Party (SP) gave a jolt to the ruling BJP. SP is poised to win 37 seats against 33 won by the BJP. BSP, which once ruled the state, failed to open its account. One seat was won by Chandrashekhar of the Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram). SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s strategy in terms of caste combination for ticket distribution and fighting on local issues delivered results as he ensured a smooth alliance with Congress. The Congress won six seats including party strongholds of Amethi and Raebareli. “UP ke ladke”, the coinage used by Congress and SP for Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi, delivered in the state. Rahul Gandhi won from two seats – Raebareli and Wayanad in Kerala. BJP lost Faizabad, which includes the temple town of Ayodhya, to the Samajwadi Party. In Maharashtra, the INDIA alliance parties gave a jolt to the ruling alliance that includes the BJP. The INDIA alliance parties won or are leading on 29 seats – Congress 13, Shiv Sena (UBT) 9 and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) 7. BJP has won or is leading on 10 seats and its allies – Shiv Sena on five seats and NCP one. In Haryana also, the BJP lost its dominance of the last two Lok Sabha polls and is slated to win five seats. Congress is also poised to win five seats in the state. Both Mahrashtra and Harayna will face assembly polls later this year. The INDIA bloc disrupted BJP‘s record of a clean sweep in Rajasthan of the previous two Lok Sabha polls and restricted it to 14 of 25 seats. Congress won eight seats one seat was won each by CPI-M one, RLD one and Bharat Adivasi Party. The result came within six months of assembly polls which the BJP had swept. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress put up a strong show and won 29 seats. The BJP, which won 18 seats in 2019, is slated to win 12 seats and Congress has won one seat. The Congress managed to slightly reduce BJP‘s domination in Gujarat, home state of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. While the BJP won 25 seats, the Congress won one seat. The BJP had earlier won Surat Lok Sabha seat unopposed. Congress did not perform according to its expectations in party-ruled Telangana and Karnataka. But it improved its tally compared to 2019 elections. Congress could win nine seats compared to 17 seats won by BJP and two by JD-S. BJP and JDS fought the elections in alliance. In Telangana, BJP and Congress won eight seats each and AIMIM won one seat. Punjab presented a mixed bag with Congress winning seven, AAP 3, Shiromani Akali Dal one and Independents two. BJP retained its domination in Assam, winning nine seats. Congress won three and UPP(L) and AGP one each. In Chhattisgarh, BJP continued its good performance, winning 10 of 11 seats. NDA did well in Bihar, belying expectations of INDIA bloc. It is ahead on 30 of 40 Lok Sabha seats. While JD-U and BJP both won 12 seats, LJP (Ram Vilas) won all five seats it contested and HAM (S) winning one seat. The RJD could not pull votes in its favour in the way Samajwadi Party did in Uttar Pradesh and could win only four seats. Congress won three seats. DMK maintained its domination in Tamil Nadu and INDIA bloc won all 39 seats in the state. Congress is poised to win nine seats. The BJP could not win a seat in the state. While Congressled UDF maintained its dominance in Kerala, there was good news for BJP also as it opened its account in the southern state by winning a seat. Addressing party workers and leaders at the BJP central office here after the results of Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi said people have reposed faith in the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He said it is the first time after 1962 that a government that completed two full tenures has got a third successive term in office. He said “new history” has been created after six decades. The Prime Minister made a special mention of BJP’s performance in Odisha where the party is poised to form government for the first time. BJP has also performed very well in the Lok Sabha polls in the state. “On this sacred day, it is confirmed that NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people, they reposed full faith on the BJP, NDA. This is the victory of the world’s largest democracy, it is a victory of strong faith on India’s Constitution, it is the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat. It is the victory of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’,” he said. FRIDAY JUNE 7, 2024 9 Foreign portfolio investors sold over Rs 12,000 crore India stocks on poll results day New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) heavily sold stocks off their portfolio in India on Tuesday, as the broader market witnessed a bloodbath, tracking initial trends in Lok Sabha results. As per data available on NSE website, foreign portfolio investors sold net stocks worth Rs 12,436 crore. Domestic institutional investors too sold heavily with net sales showing at worth Rs 3,319 crore during the session. Indian stock indices tanked today, as the Lok Sabha results were being announced, where incumbent BJP performed below par and seemed that it may fall short of exit poll predictions and the majority mark on its own. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is leading in about 300 seats while the INDIA alliance is leading in around 230 seats, as per trends from the Election Commission of India website. The idea of a coalition government led by the BJP at the centre has led to widespread market anxiety and a sharp decline in stock indices. The BJP, which has been the dominant force in Indian politics over the past decade, is seen as a pro-industry party whose policies have generally favoured economic growth and market stability. The failure to secure a clear majority by the BJP on its own raises concerns about the formation of a stable government and the continuation of economic reforms. At the closing bell, Sensex closed at 72,079.05 points, down 4,389.73 points or 5.74 per cent, while Nifty closed at 21,884.50 points, down 1,379.40 points or 5.93 per cent. All Nifty sectoral indices, barring Nifty FMCG, were deep in the red today. Nifty metal, Nifty bank, Nifty financial services, Nifty PSU bank, Nifty private bank, Nifty realty, and Nifty oil and gas, slumped the most, NSE data showed. “The steep fall is due to the results so far falling short of the exit polls which the market had discounted yesterday. If BJP doesn’t get a majority on its own there will be disappointment and this is getting reflected in the market. Also, it is possible that Modi 3.0 may not be as reform-oriented as the market expected and may turn more welfare-oriented,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, at Geojit Financial Services. At one point during the afternoon, Indian equity indices plummeted over 8 per cent on Tuesday, as poll trends indicated a closer than anticipated fight for the incumbent Narendra Modiled NDA government. Sensex logged its worst session in over four years, which it witnessed back during Covid days. “Markets rallied 3-3.5 per cent on expectation of a Modi-led NDA win on Monday. PSU (especially banks) led the rally. Today polls were not in line with the exit poll outcome. Markets move more than 45 per cent down today,” said Jaykrishna Gandhi, Head – Business Development, Institutional Equities, Emkay Global Financial Services. “We expect 710 per cent downside for broader markets from current levels. We recommend positioning to move from alpha stocks to defensives – add FMCG, IT, Pharma vs short on ABB, Siemens, Cummins, Coal India, NTPC, PFC, REC, PNB, Canara bank,” Gandhi suggested. The Rupee closed weaker against the US dollar on Tuesday, depreciating by 38 paise to close at 83.53. It closed at 83.15 on Monday. The Rupee had been largely steady for the past year, largely due to RBI’s intervention. “This uncertainty triggered a panic sell-off across various asset classes, impacting economic growth. The Dollar-Rupee exchange rate may continue to rise, potentially reaching 83.90, with 83.40 serving as the immediate support level,” said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities. M a n i s h Chowdhury, Head of Research, StoxBox, asserted that markets have reacted sharply to the initial trends of the NDA leading on around 290 seats, way less than as projected.“With the NDA still looking to form a government, though, with the important support of coalition partners, markets look jittery about the prospects of strong decision-making. Markets believe that the reformistic approach, which was a hallmark of the previous two terms, might take a backseat in the third term. However, our sense is that it is still early to jump to conclusions and should ideally wait for a clearer picture,” said Chowdhury. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, at Kotak Securities, noted that the current market texture is extremely volatile and uncertain; hence, traders should remain cautious for the next few trading sessions. On Monday, Indian benchmark indices closed at record highs, driven by fresh buying from investors after exit polls indicated a comfortable majority for the NDA government. The Nifty 50 index gained 733.20 points, closing at 23,263.90, while the BSE Sensex surged 2507.47 points to close at 76,468.78. (ANI)
