US President Joe Biden on September 21 hosted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Wilmington, Delaware, for the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit. To take the Quad agenda forward, the Quad Leaders adopted the Quad Wilmington Declaration. This year, the Quad announced executing tangible projects that benefit partner countries across the Indo-Pacific– including in the Pacific, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean Region. T h e s e include ‘Quad Cancer Moonshot’, a groundbreaking partnership to save lives in the Indo-Pacific region by combating cervical cancer. A n o t h e r initiative announced was the ‘Maritime Initiative for Training in the Indo-Pacific‘ (MAITRI) to enable Indo-Pacific partners to maximise tools provided through IPMDA (Indo- New Delhi [India], September 22 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi was sworn in as Delhi Chief Minister along with five other party leaders on Saturday. Hours after taking oath as the Chief Minister, Atishi allocated portfolios to the council of ministers and retained all the 13 departments that she held earlier as minister. Among her ministerial team, Saurabh Bhardwaj has eight portfolios, Gopal Rai three, Kailash Gahlot five and Imran Hussain two. Mukesh Ahlawat is the new face in the council of ministers. Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, several AAP ministers highlighted the policies implemented by the Kejriwal-led government, while BJP leaders said it is a “dummy government”. Imran Hussain expressed his gratitude to AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arivind Kejriwal and expressed confidence that the party will come to power in the Delhi assembly polls expected in a few months. “We will form the government again, in 4-5 months. People will make Arvind Kejriwal Chief Minister again. We are working under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwalji. Work in Delhi is happening under his care, whether it is the education model of Delhi, or 200 unit electricity free, water being free, or even free rides for women in buses. So that work will continue” AAP leader Kailash Gahlot emphasised that Arvind Kejriwal‘s guidance will continue. “Arvind Kejriwal‘s guidance as party’s national convenor will continue. Our only goal is to continue to work for the people of Delhi and to bring back Arvind Kejriwal. We will try to complete all the major works,” he said. BJP leader Vijender Gupta, said the new AAP government will be run through “remote control”. “It is a dummy government and a dummy chief minister. It will be a remote-control run government. This is just a formality. How could Arvind Kejriwal remain CM? When he talked about running the government from jail, that was also just for show...People want to take stock of the last eight months and in the next three months too the Delhi government will be run with a remote,” he alleged. BJP MP Dinesh Sharma said nothing much can be expected from the new AAP government. “There weren’t any expectations from Kejriwal. There is nothing to expect as they only have two months with them. There is such a big allegation of corruption so I think it is a challenge for them. Delhi is moving away from the path of progress. They will have to answer that in front of the people. The way they took selfies in front of garbage, now the garbage has increased. Then they used to say they didn’t have nagar nigam (Municipal Corporation) now they have that...After becoming CM for second time, what have you done?” he asked. Media in-charge of BJP‘s minority morcha Yaser Jilani said AAP will be voted out by people in the next assembly elections. He alleged that change of leadership in AAP was a “drama” and claimed that Atishi has been a “failure” as a minister. “People of Delhi are watching closely. BJP will form the government in the next assembly polls,” he said. He said Kejriwal has been granted bail by the court with conditions. “People understand why Kejriwal resigned, they will defeat them in the polls,” he added. September 27, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to Indo-Pacific cooperation: Foreign Secy Misri New York [US], September 22 (ANI): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Quad summit in US, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that prime minister emphasised India’s commitment to cooperation, contact, and engagement for growth with various partners in the Indo-Pacific region. The remarks by Misri came while he addressed a press briefing in New York. Elaborating about the plurilateral meetings, Misri said, “In the plurilateral meetings today, PM Modi underlined India’s approach to cooperation, contact and engagement for growth with a variety of partners in the IndoPacific.” He further said, “It was striking to hear the other Quad leaders acknowledge India’s actions and also at the same time, hear the expectations of India which reallly underlines the need to continue to work, and sustain this enourmous trust that India has earned from its partners...” Misri further said that during his meeting with US President Joe Biden, PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Biden for hosting the Quad Summit and for his leadership in strengthening the Quad partnership in recent times. He said, “In the bilateral meeting with President Biden and also in the Quad summit, PM Modi thanked President Biden profusely for hosting the summit and for his leadership for the Quad in recent times, and his personal committment to strengthen the Quad.” Misri also said that PM Modi also coined a description of the Quad, terming it “quick, unified assistance delivery. “PM Modi referred to the Quad in a very evocative wayhe called it quick, unified assistance delivery and the other members of the Quad said that they finally understood what the Quad really signified and stood for. The PM also mentioned that at a time when world is ridden with tensions and conflict, the coming together of these four Quad partners which share democratic values is important for humanity,” he said. Meanwhile, PM Modi on Sunday interacted with the members of the Indian diaspora after he arrived at Hotel Lotte Palace in New York. In a post on X, PM Modi shared pictures of his meeting with members of the Indian diaspora and wrote, “After programmes in Delaware, landed in New York. Kennedy International Airport in New York to attend the Summit of the Future (SOTF) at the United Nations, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal said. The accused later left her near the Dindigul Railway Station, where she sought help from the police, Dindigul District Superintendent of Police, Pradeep, said on Monday. The victim has been admitted to Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital and is undergoing treatment, the officer said on Monday. Addressing the Indian diaspora at Nassau Coliseum in New York, Long Island at Modi&US Event, he said, “You have connected India with America and America with India. Your skill, talent, and commitment are unmatched. Despite being overseas, no ocean can separate you from India.” PM Modi said that he has always understood the potential and capabilities of the Indian diaspora, and for him, they have been strong brand ambassadors of India and he calls them “Rahstradoot”. “Now Apna Namaste has also become multinational. It has gone from local to global and you have done all this. Every Indian who keeps India in his heart has done this,” PM Modi added. September 27, 2024 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK J-K: Long queues seen at polling stations during second phase of Assembly polls Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 25 (ANI): As the second phase of polling commenced in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, people in several parts of the territory were seen in long queues, waiting for their turn to cast their votes. With elections being conducted in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of 10 years, people across the region be it Jammu, Srinagar or Ganderbal, were seen enthusiastically arriving at polling stations to exercise their franchise. Long queues were seen at the Government Middle School in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Assembly constituency of Katra. One voter in Jammu, said, “I appeal to the voters to come and cast their vote...Kashmiri Pandits connect with Kashmir. Jammu is our home but the inner connection is with Kashmir...All the registered voters should come and cast their vote.” A Kashmiri Pandit voter from Jammu, Rajaji Chaudhary said, “Voting should be held it is a democratic right to every citizen. Everybody should cast their vote...We have to choose a candidate that we know will do developmental work...We will go back to our roots. We have been labelled as migrants. A person who has spent his childhood in Kashmir is emotionally linked to his roots...” Meanwhile, in a unique gesture, the first three voters at a polling station in Bagoo Rampora of Ganderbal constituency, planted saplings after casting their vote. National Conference has fielded its vice-president Omar Abdullah from Ganderbal seat while PDP has fielded Bashir Ahmad Mir from this seat. Pink polling stations were set up in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch, Reasi and Naushera districts of Jammu-Kashmir. These unique polling stations, entirely managed by women, aims to create a welcoming environment and encourage greater New York [US], September 25 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar enunciated that in a “multipolar” world where change has been stretching the fabric of the global order, the key to the future of Asia as well as the world lies in the relationship between India and China. During his opening address at the Asia Society at the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York on Tuesday, Jaishankar said Asia is at the “cutting edge of change” and that India is the part leading that change. “Asia is very much at the cutting edge of that change. Within Asia, India is part of leading that change. But that change is today stretching the fabric of the global order... I think the India–China relationship is key to the future of Asia. In a way, you can say if the world is to be multipolar, Asia has to be multipolar. And therefore, this relationship will influence not just the future of Asia but, in that way, perhaps the future of the world as well,” he said. He further said that India has to prepare to rise amid volatility and unpredictability. “India which is rising, has to prepare to rise amidst volatility and unpredictability. Typically, when countries rise, when big powers rise, they hope for congenial circumstances,” he added In his address, Jaishankar picked three words to describe the changing world. He said that to describe the world, the word “rebalancing” was an obvious choice and said that Asia played a key role in that process. “Now when I speak about rebalancing, I think Asia has been very much key to that rebalancing when we talk. If one looks, for example, at the last top 20 economies of the world, there are many more Asian economies in that than there were a few decades ago. And even if one looks among the 20, the Asian ones have really risen much more strongly and impactfully. And among them, is India, which was a decade ago the 10th largest economy in the world, currently the 5th, likely to be the third by the end of the decade,” he stated.
