In fact, he was so well-versed in the politics of the most populous state of India that he was fondly called “Netaji” by his admirers as well as his detractors. Born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai village of Etawah district, Mulayam Singh Yadav rose quickly in politics and became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice; he also served in the Union Government once as the Defence Minister. He was elected 10 times as MLA and 7 times as Lok Sabha MP. As long was his political career, a similar number of controversies surrounded it. His was the story of a politician who almost became the Prime Minister of India. In 1996, when the United Front was poised to form the government, Mulayam Singh’s name was floated to lead the alliance. It was opposed by leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav. He again saw an opportunity in 2014 but the election results dampened the possibility forever. People close to him said that the Samajwadi patriarch nursed a grievance that he could not become the Prime Minister of India despite being the chief minister of the mostpopulous state three times. His son Akhilesh Yadav took over the reins of the party later and is now its president. In 1990, his supporters claim, Mulayam Singh was set to arrest LK Advani when the latter’s Rath Yatra entered Uttar Pradesh. However, Lalu Prasad Yadav upstaged him by arresting the BJP patriarch in Samastipur. Both Lalu and Mulayam emerged after the JP Movement of the veteran freedom fighter Jayaprakash Narayan in the 1970s and later built their careers as “socialist leaders”. In 1975, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s government imposed the Emergency, Mulayam Singh was among the politicians who were arrested and imprisoned for 19 months. While he opposed Congress during the Emergency, he supported it in 2008 for the Indo-Us nuclear deal. October 14, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Amid Russia-Ukraine fighting, Indian intervention was sought to defuse Zaporizhzhia Nuke Plant crisis By Ayushi Agarwal A u c k l a n d [New Zealand], October 6 (ANI): On his first visit to New Zealand, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar termed the Russia-Ukraine conflict as still hot and recalled that India was requested to press the Russians on the issue regarding the safety of Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant when the countries increased their fighting near the nuclear facility. Addressing the Auckland business community here, Jaishankar said, “When I was in the United Nations, the big concern at that time was the safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant because there was some fighting going on very proximate to it.” “There was a request to us to press the Russians on that issue which we did. There have been other concerns at various points of time, either different countries have raised with us or the UN has raised with us. I think at this time whatever we can do, we will be willing to do,” the EAM added. Jaishankar said India may have had an impact on the UN-mediated grain deal that was worked out between Ukraine and Russia in August. “Some months ago, when there was this initiative to get the grain out through the Black Sea. The UN, which was leading the effort, were interested in our weighing in with the Russians. I have my own reasons to think, to know that somewhere, that our speaking to them had some impact and it did come back to us”, he added. Terming the conflict “still hot”, the external affairs minister said that he doesn’t see countries that would disregard India’s position and people would view it from their point of immediate interest, their historical experiences, and their insecurities. “At this point of time, conflict is still hot, passions are still high. It’s not easy for people to readily listen to voices of reason. But I can say with objectivity, that if we take our position, if we voice our views, I don’t think countries would disregard that. This was also reflected in a meeting of PM Modi and President Putin,” the minister said. Explaining India’s position on the war in Ukraine, Jaishankar said it is natural that different countries, different regions would react a little differently. “People would view it from their point of immediate interest, their historical experiences, their insecurities. To me, the diversity of the world would also naturally lead to a different response and I would not disrespect the position of other countries because I see many of them coming at it from their perception, their anxieties or their equities in Ukraine. As a foreign minister, I have to ask myself this question. In this situation what is it that India can do which obviously would be in the Indian interest but which is also in the best interest of the world. So, I think at this time the sensible thing to do is to temper down and address the specific parts of the complex situation,” he said. On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to take control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, as the UN nuclear watchdog warned that the power supply to the site was “extremely fragile”. The plant is located in the southern Ukrainian region also called Zaporizhzhia, one of four regions that President Vladimir Putin formally incorporated into Russia on Wednesday in a move condemned by Kyiv as an illegal land grab. Further, stressing upon the fact that countries should come back to the conference table and that anybody who would facilitate this settlement will do a service. “I eventually think that this conflict will require countries to come back to the conference table. It’s not a conflict which is likely to be settled. So if they are going to come back one day it is in our collective interest that day is soon rather than dead and anybody who can facilitate that, encourage that, smoothen that, I think it is doing a service,” he said. Further, talking about the climate change and pandemic, minister Jaishankar hailed India’s assistance it provided to the world by supplying medicines. “There are a lot of countries who are looking at the near term future and deeply worrying about their ability to get fuel, food or fertilizer. It is a difficult moment. And when times are difficult, it is equally important that those who have some capability to be a part of the solution, come forward, and do what they can. During the Covid, we were one of the biggest manufacturers of vaccines. We still are. And even while we were vaccinating our own people. We took a very conscious decision to help others and we prioritized countries who don’t had access to the free vaccines”, said the minister. E a r l i e r , Jaishankar held talks with his New Zealand counterpart Nanaia Mahuta and took up visa issues being faced by Indian students due to Covid19 measures imposed by the country. During the discussion with minister Mahuta, Jaishankar requested expeditious visa processing of Indian students who desire to study in New Zealand. “Took up the issue of Indian students impacted by Covid measures. Urged expeditious visa processing of those desirous of studying in New Zealand now,” the minister tweeted. Jaishankar said if India and New Zealand play to their strengths, including business, education, and agriculture, both the countries can cooperate on pressing global issues including climate action, pandemics and maritime security. In Auckland, EAM will participate in an event on October 6 along with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to felicitate members of the Indian community in New Zealand for their exceptional achievements and contributions. After wrapping up his New Zealand visit, the EAM will be visiting Canberra and Sydney. (ANI)

October 14, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more MULAYAM SINGH YADAV FROM PAGE 1 to as a politician whose ears were always close to the ground, Mulayam Singh’s career had been strewn with promises of building and breaking ties nonetheless. He launched his career by openly siding with Chandra Shekhar against VP Singh. He then surprised everyone by forging an alliance with his party’s arch-rival BSP. But the pathbreaking alliance soon broke up amid the “guesthouse incident”. While Mulayam remained critical of the BJP’s Hindutva politics, he sided with the saffron party at times. For example, Mulayam Singh Yadav surprised everyone by supporting BJP in 2002 in its bid to make APJ Abdul Kalam the President of India. Last year, a photo of Mulayam Singh Yadav with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at a function had created a flutter in political circles. Mulayam Singh passed away at the age of 82 at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital today (October 10) due to age-related ailments. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital last Sunday after his health deteriorated. His wife, Sadhana Gupta, passed away in July this year following a lung infection. Sadhana Gupta was Mulayam Singh Yadav’s second wife. His first wife Maalti Devi passed away in 2003. Maalti Devi was the mother of Akhilesh Yadav. RJD’s Lalu Yadav recalls Mulayam Singh’s contribution to socialist movement Patna (Bihar) [India], October 10 (ANI): Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday condoled the demise of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, remembering him as a stalwart of the socialist movement. “I am saddened by the news of the demise of Samajwadi patron respected Mulayam Singh ji. His contribution was incomparable in the politics of the country,” Lalu said in a tweet. Remembering Yadav as a politician who brought the underprivileged to the front line, Lalu said his memories would stay forever. Later, talking to reporters, he said, “Mulayam Singh Yadav had an important contribution to taking forward the socialist movement.” “Pray to God to give place to the departed soul at his feet. Humble tributes,” Lalu added. On Wednesday, the RJD chief had gone to meet Mulayam Singh at the hospital in Gurugram. The veteran Samajwadi Party leader passed away while undergoing treatment at the Medanta Hospital aged 82 due to prolonged illness. His condition was critical for the past few weeks and he was on life-saving drugs. Recollecting his relationship with Mulayam Singh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted several photographs in which the two leaders could be seen together. “Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji was a remarkable personality. He was widely admired as a humble and grounded leader who was sensitive to people’s problems. He served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising the ideals of Loknayak JP (Jayaprakash Narayan) and Dr Lohia (Ram Manohar Lohia),” PM Modi said. “I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti,” he added. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari remembered Mulayam Singh as a stalwart in UP politics. “Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav was a stalwart in the politics of the nation, and especially in that of Uttar Pradesh. He had a strong grip over politics because of his wider public relations and organizational skills. A good parliamentarian, Mulayam Singh created his own mark as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and as Defence Minister of the country. I had the privilege of knowing Mulayam Singh ji intimately even before I became a member of the UP Legislative Council,” Koshyari said. Koshyari said with Mulayam Singh’s death, a major chapter in UP politics has come to an end. “I pay my homage to the departed leader and convey my deepest condolences to Shri Akhilesh Yadav and other members of the bereaved family,” he added. Emerging as a socialist leader, Mulayam Singh soon established himself as an OBC stalwart, capturing a swathe of political space vacated by the Congress. He took oath as UP’s 15th CM in 1989, which marked the year when the Congress was voted out, failing to return to power in the state ever since. Bihar: Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav express grief over Mulayam Singh Yadav’s death Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed condolences on the death of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday and said that the latter’s death is an irreparable loss to the nation. “His death is an irreparable loss to the nation. He was a great socialist leader. He was also the Defense Minister of the country. He was one of the effective voices fighting for the rights of the poor,” Kumar tweeted. FRIDAY OCTOBER 14, 2022 7 ~ INDIA ~ NEPAL ~ BANGLA DESH ~ PAKISTAN ~ SRI LANKA ~ AFRICA ~ ASIA ~ EUROPE ~ MIDDLE EAST 1-800-343-0038 WEBSITE: GOFLYHOME.COM SC issues notice on plea to declare ‘Talaq-e-Kinaya’ , ‘Talaq-e-Bain’ void New Delhi [India], October 10 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on the plea seeking direction or declaration to declare that “all forms of unilateral extra-judicial Talaq including Talaq-e-Kinaya and Talaq-e- Bain” is void and unconstitutional. A bench of Justices S Abdul S Nazeer issued a notice to the Centre and tagged it along with a similar plea. During the hearing, Justice Nazeer said, “This is very unfortunate. I was shocked on reading about it.” Justice JB Pardiwala asked where are they getting such terminologies. Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay appearing for the petitioner told the bench that such talaqs are new things and no other country practised this. The PIL also sought direction to the Centre to frame guidelines for “gender neutral religion neutral uniform grounds of divorce and uniform procedure of divorce for all citizens”. The petitioner, a doctor by profession from Karnataka said she was married to her husband as per Muslim rites on October 22, 2020, and after the marriage, her husband and his family members tortured her physically-mentally for dowry. When the petitioner’s father refused to give dowry, her husband, also a doctor, gave her TalaqE-Kinaya/Talaq-E-Bain through a Qazi and lawyer, which is totally against Articles 14, 15, 21 and 25, plea stated. In January 2022, a letter was sent from the Qazi office where her husband made some vague allegations against her and stated that due to all these conditions it is not possible to continue this matrimonial relationship. T a l a q - ek i n a y a / Ta l a q - e - b a i n (an instantaneous and irrevocableandextra-judicial form of talaq, in a single sitting, either pronounced or in written/electronic form) was given to her by her husband, she claimed. There was continuous pressure from in-laws and Qazi to take ‘Khula or further Talaq-eHasan’ notices would be sent monthly basis, and not a single mediation between husband and wife was attempted by Qazi and instant, irrevocable and unconstitutional Talaq practice was entertained bypassing Madhya Pradesh High Court by January 2022 guidelines stating “Qazi can just act as a mediator to settle disputes but can’t adjudicate them and pass orders like a decree”, stated the plea. Talaq-E-Kinaya and Talaq-E-Bain are arbitrary irrational and not only contrary to Articles 14, 15, 21, and 25 of the Constitution of India but also totally against the international conventions on civil rights and human rights, it added. Hence, the petitioner is challenging the constitutional validity of Talaq-E-Kinaya and Talaq-E-Bain and also seeking direction to the Centre to frame “gender neutral religion neutral uniform grounds of divorce and uniform procedure of divorce for all citizens”. (ANI) New Delhi [India], October 9 (ANI): A four-year-old girl died after a building collapsed near Delhi’s Lahori gate on Sunday evening. The incident took place near Valmiki Mandir, Farsh Khana Lahori gate around 7:30 pm. Five fire tenders rushed to the spot. Nine people are admitted to LNJP Hospital so far. FRIDAY OCTOBER 14, 2022 9 Sale Ends 10/22/2022 Singapore, UAE to accept RuPay payment mechanism: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Wa s h i n g t o n [US], October 12 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday (local time) said that Singapore and UAE have shown interest to accept the RuPay payment system acceptable in their countries. Sitharaman also said that India is holding consultations with different countries to make RuPay acceptable in their nations. “We are talking to different countries. Singapore and UAE have all come forward now to make Rupay acceptable in their countries,” Sitharaman said at the Brookings Institute think-tank during a fireside conversation with eminent economist Eshwar Prasad. “Not just that, the UPI (Unified Payments Interface), the BHIM app, and NCPI (the National Payments Corporation of India) are all now being worked in such a way that their systems in their respective country, however, robust or otherwise can talk to our system and the interoperability itself will give strength for Indians expertise in those countries,” she said. Meanwhile, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Sitharaman asked developed nations to take responsibility for the global spillover caused by policy decisions taken by them. The minister said in her written remarks hit out at the developed countries for imposing sanctions on nations who are merely fulfilling their moral and democratic obligations to their people. “International cooperation is needed more than ever is to state the obvious. In the near-term, advanced nations must take responsibility for the global spillover of their political and economic policy decisions and put in place safety nets rather than impose sanctions on nations who are merely fulfilling their moral and democratic obligations for their people,” These comments come as India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy in the world. In its July 2022 report, the IMF had pegged India’s GDP growth for 2022 at 7.4 per cent. The IMF’s latest projection on India’s GDP growth is lower than the 7 per cent growth pegged by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the financial year 2022-23. However, despite the slowdown, India would remain the fastest-growing major economy. As India prepares to accept the Presidency of the G-20 grouping of nations, Sitharaman said “India is ready to do whatever it can to facilitate dialogue, discussions and decisions on these critical issues.” During her address, she pointed out several factors that underpin India’s growth story, including digitisation and financial inclusion, strengthening the MSME and improvement in the quality of government spending with an emphasis on capital expenditure and targeted social security support for the needy. Explaining India’s growth story, the finance minister said, “India as a developing nation has always stood ahead for the growth of the global commons.” “India’s commitment to multilateralism is evident by the initiatives we have taken to supply vaccines to over 100 nations, provide disaster relief to those in distress, and partner with other countries, with a focus on green growth, better connectivity, digital delivery and accessible health,” she added. Sitharaman is on an official visit to the US. During her visit, she will be attending the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governor (FMCBG) Meetings. The Finance Minister will take part in bilateral meetings with several countries, including Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Bhutan, New Zealand, Egypt, Germany, Mauritius, UAE, Iran and Netherlands. The Finance Minister will also hold one-on-one meetings with leaders & heads of OECD, the European Commission and UNDP. The Finance Minister will meet US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and David Malpass, President, World Bank separately to discuss issues of mutual interest. During the later part of the visit, the Union Finance Minister will attend roundtable meetings with USIBC and USISPF on themes to ‘Strengthen Investment and Innovation in India-US Corridor’ and “Investing in India’s Digital Revolution”. These meetings with leading business leaders and investors are aimed at highlighting India’s policy priorities and deliberate on measures to facilitate foreign investment by showcasing India’s attractiveness as an investment destination.
