The Speaker of Lok Sabha issues Directions to regulate certain matters not specifically provided for in the rules. These Directions have been issued periodically, with the first edition dating back to 1956. Various Lok Sabhas have seen amendments and additions to these Directions over the years, including new Directions and amendments to existing ones.
The Directions cover a wide range of topics such as oath or affirmation, arrangement of business, private members' bills and resolutions, questions, half-an-hour discussions, and more. The Directions have been amended and updated over time to reflect the changing needs and practices of the Lok Sabha. The latest edition includes amendments made during the Sixteenth Lok Sabha, incorporating changes to Directions 10B and 124A.
Words and expressions used in the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, as well as in these Directions, are defined to provide clarity and consistency in their interpretation and application.
