Bournemouth University and the REC 6 A note on ethnic terminology
About BU staff A significant minority of BU staff identify as Black or Minority Ethnic (BAME). The staff survey BU employs a total of 184 BAME Staff, 12% of all employees. Of those, 136 are employed on an academic contract and 48 on a PSS staff contract. This equates to 19% of academic staff employed declaring a BAME ethnicity and 6% of PSS staff. 56 of our respondents were from a BAME background which at 15% is a higher percentage than the 12% of all employees. Although survey responses came mostly from those with a white ethnicity, the BAME respondents are proportionate to the number of BAME employees at BU. Staff survey feedback suggests that BU needs to strengthen staff awareness and competencies to recognise and celebrate diversity.
25% of BU students identify as Black or Minority Ethnic. Of these the largest subgroup is Asian. The student survey 38% of respondents identified as BAME. 73% of BAME students agreed with the statement "The ethnic /racial diversity of BU impacts on my sense of belonging."
