The counting will begin at Parliament House at 11 am. The voting took place on July 18 and was completed in a peaceful manner. The contest is between BJP-led NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu and opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. The NDA candidate is seen to have a clear edge in the contest. The voting ended at 5 pm at the Parliament House and at designated places in the capitals of all states besides the UTs of Puducherry and Delhi on Monday. Of the 736 electors comprising 727 MPs and nine MLAs who were permitted by the Election Commission to vote at Parliament House, 728 electors cast their vote. This includes 719 MPs and nine MLAs. The total turnout at Parliament House was 98.91 per cent. Arrangements were made to bring back the polled ballot boxes from states to Parliament House by July 19. The counting will take place in Room No 63 in Parliament House and the result will be declared immediately after the counting. The immediate precincts of Room Number 63 have been declared as sanitized and “silent zone”. Only counting officers, officials deployed to assist the Rajya Sabha Secretary General, candidates and one authorized representative of each candidate, observers appointed by the Election Commission, and media persons with valid passes will be allowed entry into the counting hall. Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody is the returning officer for the Presidential election. With hours to go for the counting of votes to take place to elect the 15th President of India, people belonging to the native place of NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu, Rairangpur in Odisha, have made sweets anticipating her victory in the contest against Yashwant Sinha, the Opposition candidate. The people of her native place have also planned a victory procession and tribal dance on Thursday. “Tomorrow will be a big day for Rairangpur and for the entire Odisha because, for the first time in the history of India, a tribal woman will become the President of India. There is an atmosphere of celebration here. 20,000 sweets are being made. There will be fireworks and tribal dance tomorrow morning. The victory procession will be taken out tomorrow,” said a local resident. The Headteacher of the Government Upper Primary School where Murmu studied, recalling her school life, said that she was a brilliant student and wanted to “serve the people”. “From 1968 to 1970, I was the Head Teacher, when she was studying in the school. I feel very proud to know about Droupadi Murmu. She was a brilliant student. July 22, 2022 Friday INDIA THIS WEEK Monkeypox testing begins in Kerala: State Health Minister Veena George Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 19 (ANI): Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday informed that the state has started Monkeypox testing at NIV Alapuzha. “Testing has started at NIV Alapuzha. Kits have been brought to NIV Alapuzha from Pune. Samples from districts are now being sent to Alapuzha for testing. A new disease has been reported in the state. Following that testing is being conducted by taking all precautions. Testing samples in Kerala will reduce the time duration to get the result,” said Veena George. India reported its second case of monkeypox in Kerala’s Kannur district on July 18. A 31-year-old man has contracted the infection and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. The first case of the monkeypox virus also originated in India on July 14 after a UAE traveller returned to Kerala. He has been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), monkeypox is a viral zoonotic infection caused by the monkeypox virus. It spreads mostly from human contact. T h e multidisciplinary central team of officials has been already deployed by the Union Health Ministry. Those in close contact with him have been put under surveillance, the minister added. Earlier on July 14, India reported the first Monkeypox case of a UAE traveller from Kerala. The Union Health Ministry on Friday released new guidelines for the management of the Monkeypox disease. The Ministry listed out points for the general masses to avoid the contradiction of the disease which included avoiding contact with dead or wild animals (rodents, monkeys). The official to ANI also said that no need to panic all fresh guidelines has been issued to all States and UTs. “No need to panic as the Centre has given fresh directions to all the states and Union Territories regarding Monkeypox. It spreads through close contact with lesions, body fluids, prolonged contact with Respiratory Droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding,” said official sources. Health secretary Rajesh Bhushan cited the letter sent by the ministry on May 31 in which it had issued a comprehensive ‘Guidelines for Management of Monkeypox Disease’. As of now, there is no reported case of Monkeypox has been reported in India. The health secretary asked all the states and union territories to take key actions like orientation and regular re-orientation of all key stakeholders including health screening teams at points of entry (PoE), disease surveillance teams, doctors working in hospitals about common signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, case definitions for suspect/ probable/confirmed cases and contacts, contact tracing and other surveillance activities that need to be undertaken following the detection of a case, testing, IPC protocols, clinical management etc. He further asked to screen and test all suspect cases at points of entry and in the community. “Patient isolation (until all lesions have resolved and scabs have completely fallen off), protection of ulcers, symptomatic and supportive therapies, continued monitoring and timely treatment of complications remain the key measures to prevent mortality,” he said. Bhushan said that the intensive risk communication directed at healthcare workers identified sites in health facilities (such as skin, paediatric OPDs, immunization clinics, intervention sites identified by NACO etc.), as well as the general public about simple preventive strategies and the need for prompt reporting of cases, needs to be undertaken. The hospitals must be identified and adequate human resource and logistic support should be ensured at identified hospitals equipped to manage suspect/confirmed cases of Monkeypox. “I am sure, States/UTs shall make all efforts to ensure effective preparedness and take required action as per the guidelines. Union Ministry of Health shall continue to monitor the situation closely and will extend all requisite support in this regard,” he added. According to the WHO South East Asia regional director the region has been on alert for Monkeypox. “The Region has been on alert for monkeypox. Countries have been taking measures to rapidly detect and take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of monkeypox,” said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia. “WHO has been supporting Member countries in the Region assess the risk for monkeypox and strengthen their capacities to prepare and respond to the evolving multi-country outbreak,” she said. In a statement Union Ministry of Health and family welfare, “On the direction of Union Health Minister a team from the Union Health Ministry visited Safdarjang Hospital for fact finding in the matter of the delivery incident that took place at SJH today morning. Five of the doctors have been debarred from duties till a high-level probe in the matter is completed. The lady and the newborn are currently in the care of the SJH hospital.” The woman who delivered the baby outside the hospital was referred to Safdarjung on Monday. According to the Hospital PRO Poonam Dhanda, “Safdarjung has no refusal policy, the pregnant woman was examined yesterday at 5:45 pm and offered admission but didn’t return with admission papers.” “The next day a senior resident on morning duty was informed that a patient was delivering outside the hospital. The Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved the proposal for the allocation of land to the Central Government. “The state government has decided to provide government land measuring 9.685 acres in Mouza Khordha under Khordha Tahasil of Khordha District to Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for construction of Paika Memorial in the memory of Paika Rebellion at the foothills of Barunei Hill,” a press statement from Revenue and Disaster Management Department on was sent and the delivery was taken care of,” she said further. West Bengal: 7 people die after consuming spurious liquor in Howrah Howrah (West Bengal) [India], July 20 (ANI): As many as seven people died on Wednesday morning in the Ghusuri area of Howrah district of West Bengal, after allegedly drinking spurious liquor at an illicit hooch joint. Six more people have been admitted to a nearby hospital and several of them are in critical condition. Speaking to ANI in this regard, Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Kumar Tripathi said, “As many as seven people died and several others fell ill today morning. Prima facie, it appears that the incident happened after consuming illegal liquor in Howrah.” “Six people are under medical treatment in a hospital. The exact cause of death can be ascertained after post-mortem,” said the police official. The police are ascertaining the exact cause of the incident. Further probe into the matter is underway. Last week, the death of four persons allegedly due to the consumption of spurious liquor in West Bengal‘s Bardhaman district, triggered panic among the people. While the police maintained that they were awaiting details of the postmortem, raids were held at several hotels and eateries in the town. Sadly, this was not the first such incident reported in the State. More than 140 people were killed at Sangrampur in South 24 Parganas in December 2011 after drinking illicit liquor. In November 2018, at least seven persons died at Santipur in Nadia. (ANI) R a n c h i (Jharkhand) [India], July 20 (ANI): Hours after a female sub-inspector named Sandhya Topno was mowed down to death allegedly during a vehicle check, Jharkhand Police on Wednesday assured that the guilty won’t be spared. In an exclusive conversation with ANI today, Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kaushal Kishore said, “We got information from Tupudana Out Post area that a suspicious vehicle coming from Gumla is reaching Ranchi. Thus, a police check led by subinspector Sandhya Topno was deployed in the area.” The police have arrested one accused in the matter and is trying to nab the other accused. “This incident happened with the Sub-Inspector while she was trying to stop this vehicle. After getting injured, she was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead. The vehicle has been taken into custody and the driver has been arrested too,” said Ranchi SSP Kishore Kaushal. The accused arrested tried to breach government works as well in the past, the police said. “One more person was present inside the vehicle, for whom a continuous search is on. Efforts will be to complete the investigation quickly and get the guilty punished with a speedy trial. Sources told ANI that during the 16th round of Corps Commander-level talks held at the ChushulMoldo border meeting point on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control, some positive movement has been agreed upon between the two sides on the disengagement issue. They said that it is likely that the Indian side could move from the friction point southeast towards the Karam Singh Hill feature while the Chinese could move north towards the point 5170 hill feature located on their side of the LAC. Since May 2020, when the Chinese military tried to aggressively change the status quo on LAC in eastern Ladakh, both sides have been deployed opposite each other near Patrolling Point 15 which has emerged as a friction point. India has been looking at complete disengagement of troops from the friction points and moving back troops to the pre-May, 2020 situation in the entire sector. The last disengagement of troops on the LAC took place a year ago which led to the limited resolution of the standoff at Patrol Point 17A in Gogra. India and China also disengaged troops from both banks of Pangong Tso. The Indian Army responded strongly to the Chinese aggression in 2020 and moved multiple formations toward the Ladakh sector to bolster its preparedness. The Army has now allotted the Mathurabased 1 Strike Corps to the Northern borders while formations from all around the sector are holding their summer exercises there to keep a check on the People’s Liberation Army’s activities across the Line of Actual Control.
