classical guitar An evening that celebrates the journey of classical guitar and its early roots, to the refined instrument that we know today. Modern classical guitar, a charming but quiet instrument, that was only seen at salons or small gatherings until one man - Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia - through his expressive tone and powerful musical presence, brought the guitar to great concert halls and theaters. His influence transformed the guitar into a respective voice across the globe. Martina Bevis will share some of his music and repertoire he helped to create. She has invited special guests, Lynn-Marie Smith on piano, and John Griffith on cello, for a few special pieces. A real treat! Enjoy this evening of classical guitar inspired by Segovia’s brilliance. Nearly all classical guitarists owe everything to Segovia’s passion. with Special Guests Lynn-Marie Smith piano John Griffith cello

Martina Bevis

Martina Bevis is a classical guitarist born in Prague,

Czech Republic. She began studying classical guitar at age of six. After graduating music school, she got excepted to Prague Conservatory and studied under prof. Vaclav Kucera. After graduation she continued performing throughout Czech Republic while also teaching young students. A love of exploration eventually took her to England and later to the United States (2003) where she settled with her wife and their nine pets and six guitars. Her major inspiration was Spanish flamenco virtuoso Paco de Lucia. “The first time I heard him, I thought, “Wow…I need to practice even more, because every note he played felt like a reminder that the guitar can always do more - and so can I.” Martina mostly plays a cedar top guitar handmade by Manuel Adalid in Spain in 2018, her most favorite guitar. When she is not rescuing animals, she works as a personal trainer at Webefit, balancing fitness and music with equal passion. Lynn-Marie Smith began playing the piano at 6 years old growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and over the years accompanied numerous musicals, cabaret performers and choruses. After moving to Key West in 2001 she began studying the violin, ultimately joining the Key West Community Orchestra as second violin and pianist. Lynn-Marie has also played piano with the Keys Chamber Orchestra, and is currently the pianist for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. This is her second concert performing with Martina, a real joy! John Griffith was lucky enough to attend school in a district that had an exceptional music program.  He began studying the cello in fourth grade and continued playing even through a few years of college but then was seduced away from music by the magic of Information Technology – or Data Processing as it was called all those years ago. Despite not making a career of music, he enjoys playing when he can and is very pleased to be performing this year with Martina.  John plays a circa 1900 cello by Gustave Bazin, a member of the respected bow-making family in Mirecourt, France.
